This volume contains papers selected by leading specialists in algebraic semigroups in the U.S., the United Kingdom, and Australia. Many of the papers strongly influenced the development of algebraic semigroups, but most were virtually unavailable outside the U.S.S.R. Written by some of the most prominent Soviet researchers in the field, the papers have a particular emphasis on semigroups of transformations. Boris Schein of the University of Arkansas is the translator.

Early in 1952 it became obvious that a new printing would be needed, and new advances in the theory called for extensive revision. It has been completely rewritten, mostly by Phillips, and much has been added while keeping the existing framework. Thus, the algebraic tools play a major role, and are introduced early, leading to a more satisfactory operational calculus and spectral theory. The Laplace-Stieltjes transform methods, used by Hille, have not been replaced but rather supplemented by the new tools. - Foreword.

The research results published in this volume range from pure mathematical theory (semigroup theory, discrete mathematics, and so on) to theoretical computer science, in particular formal languages and automata. The papers are the proceedings of the Third International Colloquium on Words, Languages and Combinatorics, and they address issues in the algebraic and combinatorial theories of semigroups, words and languages, the structure theory of automata, the classification theory of formal languages and codes, and applications of these theories to various areas, like quantum and molecular computing, coding theory, and cryptography.

The aim of the series is to present new and important developments in pure and applied mathematics. Well established in the community over two decades, it offers a large library of mathematics including several important classics. The volumes supply thorough and detailed expositions of the methods and ideas essential to the topics in question. In addition, they convey their relationships to other parts of mathematics. The series is addressed to advanced readers wishing to thoroughly study the topic. Editorial Board Lev Birbrair, Universidade Federal do Ceará, Fortaleza, Brasil Walter D. This book contains contributions by leading experts which cover an extensive range of topics in semigroups theory. Some of the articles exhibit the strong links with theoretical computer science. Several survey articles summarize the salient features of special fields of the theory of particular interest in the contemporary research. Special care has been taken in the presentation of the papers, making them accessible to a large audience.

The material in this volume was presented in a second-year graduate course at Tulane University, during the academic year 1958-1959. The book aims at being largely self-contained, but it is assumed that the reader has some familiarity with sets, mappings, groups, and lattices. Only in Chapter 5 will more preliminary knowledge be required, and even there the classical definitions and theorems on the matrix representations of algebras and groups are summarized.

In recent years important progress has been made in the study of semi-groups of operators from the viewpoint of approximation theory. These advances have primarily been achieved by introducing the theory of intermediate spaces. The applications of the theory not only permit integration of a series of diverse questions from many domains of mathematical analysis but also lead to significant new results on classical approximation theory, on the initial and boundary behavior of solutions of partial differential equations, and on the theory of singular integrals. The aim of this book is to present a systematic treatment of semi groups of bounded linear operators on Banach spaces and their connec tions with approximation theoretical questions in a more classical setting as well as within the setting of the theory of intermediate spaces. However, no attempt is made to present an exhaustive account of the theory of semi-groups of operators per se, which is the central theme of the monumental treatise by HILLE and PHILLIPS (1957). Neither has it been attempted to give an account of the theory of approximation as such. A number of excellent books on various aspects of the latter theory has appeared in recent years, so for example CHENEY (1966), DAVIS (1963), LORENTZ (1966), MEINARDUS (1964), RICE (1964), SARD (1963). By contrast, the present book is primarily concerned with those aspects of semi-group theory that are connected in some way or other with approximation.
