Question, Did Sir Francis Drake Land on Any Part of the Oregon Coast? (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Question, Did Sir Francis Drake Land on Any Part of the Oregon Coast? The old and new settlers in rich and beautiful Oregon may like to learn the facts as known about Sir Francis Drake's famous voyage off the coasts of California and Oregon in 1579. The popular idea has prevailed among many Oregonians that Drake was the first to make a landing on the coast of Oregon, and to see and note its natural resources, between the parallels of North Latitudes 42 deg. and 48 deg. Some of them think he made his landing either at the mouth of the Chetco River, in Curry County, or at Port Orford, in Coos County. In this little tract will be found extracts made from all the oldest and best authorities on the subject: these I have collected from the original documents existing in the archives of the British Museum in London; and the three maps given are facsimiles of those most ancient ones found therein. I have also given extracts from the latest modern writers on the subject. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Thunder Go North

Book Description

"This manuscript is a fresh look at determining the location of the 1579 landing site of Sir Francis Drake on the northwest coast of North America to repair his ship, the Golden Hind. This landing location has long been debated and was claimed by California, especially with the finding of the brass plate thought to be an artifact of Drake's landing located on a hill overlooking San Francisco Bay. Although the brass plate was supposedly authenticated in 1938, by 1977 it was proven to be a hoax, yet no re-examination of the landing question or associated data was completed"--Provided by publisher.

Treasure Rocks of Neah-kah-nie Mountain

Book Description

The Treasure Rocks of Neahkahnie Mountain, is no doubt the most important collection of information ever written about the area. It's difficult to over estimate the importance of the facts that you present here. Well done!!" Bob La Du, Ph.D., Portland, Oreogn. During Francis Drake's circumnavigation in 1579, in becoming the first European Captain to pilot a ship around the globe, he performed a 16th century navigation survey on Neah-kah-nie Mountain as a Symbolic Sovereign Act of a land claim by building rock cairns. The incised rock markers have become known as the Treasure Rocks of Neah-kah-nie Mountain. The autobiographical narrative of the Captain Francis Drake survey was conveyed to the author by M. Wayne Jensen, how he and Donald Viles made their discovery of the survey, its subsequent verification by Phil Costaggini and Robert J. Schultz, A.S.C.E., Oregon State University Master's thesis "Survey of Artifacts at Neah-kah-nie Mountain Oregon", and how the incised markers were eventually deciphered by the author are presented here.
