Zusammenfassung: This book advances a much-needed "postcolonial" framework in analyzing the police. It seeks to deepen our understanding of the police's role in maintaining Western global domination throughout the American region despite the violent end of colonial rule. Building on Chevigny's (1995) classic study, this book seeks to draw renewed attention to the role of police in perpetrating state violence and serving as the tip of the spear of state power. It seeks to understand the construction of marginality and the multiple and intersecting structures of colonial domination, before shining a light directly on the crimes of the state, in an attempt to hold criminal state organizations to account. It draws on interdisciplinary perspectives and methodologies that center marginalized and colonized experiences and allows for the development of counter colonial knowledge. It speaks to academics and students in criminology, sociology, political science, and law, as well as to ethnic and area studies programs, such as Chicano/Latino and Latin American Studies, and to police administrators and policymakers. Peasants are a majority of the world’s poor. Despite this, there has been little effort to bridge the fields of peasant and poverty studies. Peasant Poverty and Persistence in the Twenty-first Century provides a much-needed critical perspective linking three central questions: Why has peasantry, unlike other areas of non-capitalist production, persisted? Why are the vast majority of peasants poor? And how are these two questions related? Interweaving contributions from various disciplines, the book provides a range of responses, offering new theoretical, historical and policy perspectives on this peasant 'world drama'. Scholars from both South and North argue that, in order to find the policy paths required to overcome peasants’ misery, we need a seismic transformation in social thought, to which they make important contributions. They are convinced that we must build upon the peasant economy’s advantages over agricultural capitalism in meeting the challenges of feeding the growing world population while sustaining the environment. Structured to encourage debate among authors and mutual learning, Peasant Poverty and Persistence takes the reader on an intellectual journey toward understanding the peasantry.

This book deals with Greek lyric composed more than twenty-five centuries ago. These poems sing of everyday events and emotions in human life, from the most festive to the most serious, presenting a living portrait of the ancient Greeks. This multidisciplinary volume begins with a panorama of Greek lyric poetic genres, their main authors and their representative topics. The first part contains philological studies and literary analyses, first of some Greek poets—Anacreon, Sappho and Lycophron, among others—then of their influence on Horace’s Latin poetry, and on contemporary poetry. The second part, illustrated with colour images, studies Greek lyric from socio-political and iconographic perspectives, analysing its coincidences and reflections in images from Greek pottery, sculptures and reliefs. In addition, this section includes two works on musical theory and composition related to ancient Greek lyric. The volume closes with two studies of the image of Sappho in cinema.

Douglas M. Gibler argues that threats to homeland territories force domestic political centralization within the state. Using an innovative theory of state development, he explains patterns of international conflict and democracy in the world over time.

Henri Lefebvre has considerable claims to be the greatest living philosopher. His work spans some sixty years and includes original work on a diverse range of subjects, from dialectical materialism to architecture, urbanism and the experience of everyday life. The Production of Space is his major philosophical work and its translation has been long awaited by scholars in many different fields. The book is a search for a reconciliation between mental space (the space of the philosophers) and real space (the physical and social spheres in which we all live). In the course of his exploration, Henri Lefebvre moves from metaphysical and ideological considerations of the meaning of space to its experience in the everyday life of home and city. He seeks, in other words, to bridge the gap between the realms of theory and practice, between the mental and the social, and between philosophy and reality. In doing so, he ranges through art, literature, architecture and economics, and further provides a powerful antidote to the sterile and obfuscatory methods and theories characteristic of much recent continental philosophy. This is a work of great vision and incisiveness. It is also characterized by its author's wit and by anecdote, as well as by a deftness of style which Donald Nicholson-Smith's sensitive translation precisely captures.

This artist's book accompanies the exhibition of a collaborative project by Swiss artist Ursula Biemann and Brazilian architect Paulo Tavares, presented at the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum, MSU in August 2014. Forest Law is a dynamic visual-textual engagement with the legal, ecological, cosmological and scientific dimensions of the tropical forest in the Ecuadorian Amazon. A trajectory through a transforming landscape, the book illuminates a series of legal cases and indigenous struggles for the rights of nature, incorporating text fragments, video stills and newly designed maps as well as a selection from legal documents, historical archives and other research material. This publication is coupled with the exhibition catalogue The Land Grant: Forest Law.
