This book can be used outside of the classroom, or as an in-class textbook. As a textbook, it can stand alone (e.g., for a first-year experience course) or be used as a supplemental text for any course. The book is developed on the successes and experiences of the author and the people (students and professionals) who have contributed ideas and quotes. The book is divided into two parts, with fifteen chapters in each part, which is consistent with the length of traditional college semesters. One chapter from each part can be read each week over the course of a semester, or the book can be read sequentially. The assignments at the end of each chapter can be used in a variety of ways. They can serve as discussion prompts to introduce a topic, or as thought questions after a chapter has been read. There are fewer grounds today than in the past to deplore a North‑South divide in research and innovation. This is one of the key findings of the UNESCO Science Report: towards 2030. A large number of countries are now incorporating science, technology and innovation in their national development agenda, in order to make their economies less reliant on raw materials and more rooted in knowledge.
