Conversion

Book Description

Does what a church believes about how people become Christians change how we do evangelism? In this concise book, Michael Lawrence explains the doctrine of conversion and helps us consider the relationship between what we believe about how people are saved and our approach to sharing the gospel in the context of the local church. Readers of this book will understand how the local church should participate in the conversion process through ordinary means, such as biblical preaching and intentional relationships.

What Is a Healthy Church Member?

Book Description

Biblically and practically instructs church members in ways they can labor for the health of their church. What Is a Healthy Church Member? takes its cue from Mark Dever's book What Is a Healthy Church?, which offered one definition of what a healthy church looks like biblically and historically. In this new work, pastor Thabiti Anyabwile attempts to answer the natural next question: "What does a healthy church member look like in the light of Scripture?" God intends for us to play an active and vital part in the body of Christ, the local church. He wants us to experience the local church as a home more profoundly wonderful and meaningful than any other place on earth. He intends for his churches to be healthy places and for the members of those churches to be healthy as well. This book explains how membership in the local church can produce spiritual growth in its members and how each member can contribute to the growth and health of the whole.

The Gospel Call and True Conversion

Book Description

The apostle Paul gave the gospel the first place in his preaching, endeavored with all his might to proclaim it clearly, and even went so far as to pronounce a curse upon all those who would pervert its truth. Yet how sad it is that many, even among those considering themselves evangelicals, have reduced the gospel message to a few trite statements to be repeated, and view conversion as a mere human decision. In The Gospel Call and True Conversion , Paul Washer challenges such easy believism as he examines the real meaning of things like faith, repentance, and receiving Christ. He also deals extensively with the effects of saving grace that God promises in the new covenant; namely, the creation of new hearts and new people. Table of Contents: PART ONE: The Gospel Call 1. A Call to Repentance 2. A Call to Faith 3. Believe and Confess 4. Receiving Christ 5. Christ at Heart’s Door PART TWO: New Hearts and the Nature of True Conversion 6. The Great Motive and End of Salvation 7. The Author of Salvation 8. Separation and Cleansing 9. A New Heart 10. The Effectual Spirit PART THREE: New People and the Nature of True Conversion 11. The Glory of the New Covenant 12. The Making of New People 13. The Christian’s Sure Knowledge of God 14. The Heart and Way of God’s People 15. The Everlasting Covenant 16. God’s Goodness to His People Series Descriptions Although the Recovering the Gospel Series does not represent an entirely systematic presentation of the gospel, it does address most of the essential elements, especially those that are most neglected in contemporary Christianity. It is the hope of the author that these words might be a guide to help you rediscover the gospel in all its beauty, scandal, and saving power. It is his prayer that such a rediscovery might transform your life, strengthen your proclamation, and bring the greatest glory to God.

False Prophets and Their Blind Followers

Book Description

In this brief treatise, the authors attempt to describe modern false prophets in the light of God's Word. The so-called evangelical but unbiblical messages are also clearly exposed. Instead of recognizing false prophets and preachers for what they are by their evil fruits (Matthew 7:16), some think highly of them. They assume they are genuine and blindly follow them without questioning their credibility. Jesus called them "ravenous wolves in sheep's clothing" (Matthew 7:15). The Apostle Paul calls them "deceitful workers transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ" (2 Corinthians 11:13). The only way to identify such is through their evil fruits which cannot escape the notice of spiritually discerning eyes of those who are truly converted and have God's Holy Spirit dwelling in them. Jesus' call to beware of false prophets based on their evil fruits is redundant if we choose to remain careless by tolerating in our midst such false prophets claiming to be God's anointed servants. The New Mormon Challenge

Book Description

Current facts about Mormonism: Over 11 million members. Over 60,000 full-time missionaries—more than any other single missionary-sending organization in the world. More than 310,000 converts annually. As many as eighty percent of converts come from Protestant backgrounds. (In Mormon circles, the saying is, “We baptize a Baptist church every week.”) Within fifteen years, the numbers of missionaries and converts will roughly double. Within eighty years, with adherents exceeding 267 million, Mormonism could become the first world-religion to arise since Islam. You may know the statistics. What you probably don’t know are the advances the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) is making in apologetics and academic respectability. With superb training, Mormon scholars outclass many of their opponents. Arguments against Mormon claims are increasingly refuted as outdated, misinformed, or poorly argued. The New Mormon Challenge is a response to the burgeoning challenge of scholarly Mormon apologetics. Written by a team of respected Christian scholars, it is free of caricature, sensationalism, and diatribe. The respectful tone and responsible, rigorous, yet readable scholarship set this book in a class of its own. It offers freshly researched and well-documented rebuttals of Mormon truth claims. Most of the chapter topics have never been addressed, and the criticisms and arguments are almost entirely new. But The New Mormon Challenge does not merely challenge Mormon beliefs; it offers the LDS Church and her members ways to move forward. The New Mormon Challenge will help you understand the intellectual appeal of Mormonism, and it will reveal many of the fundamental weaknesses of the Mormon worldview. Whether you are sharing the gospel with Mormons or are investigating Mormonism for yourself, this book will help you accurately understand Mormonism and see the superiority of the historic Christian faith. Outstanding scholarship and sound methodology make this an ideal textbook. The biblical, historical, scientific, philosophical, and theological discussions are fascinating and will appeal to Christians and Mormons alike. Exemplifying Christian scholarship at its best, The New Mormon Challenge pioneers a new genre of literature on Mormonism. The Editors Francis J. Beckwith, Carl Mosser, and Paul Owen are respected authorities on the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the authors of various books and significant articles on Mormonism. With contributors including such respected scholars as Craig L. Blomberg, William Lane Craig, J. P. Moreland, and others, The New Mormon Challenge is, as Richard Mouw states in his foreword, “an important event for both Protestant evangelicals and Mormons” that models “to the evangelical community what it is like to engage in respectful and meaningful exploration of a viewpoint with which we disagree on key points.”

Evidence of Genuine Conversion

Book Description

There is an Old Testament verse that describes the majority of the world's population in regards to saving faith in the one true God: "Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision" (Joel 3:14). This is very sad, but equally sad is a serious condition, not outside, but inside the Church. A one word change in the above verse would make it read: "Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of [deception]." This one word change aptly describes the "serious condition" mentioned above, a condition which this book addresses. Being in the right religion, and acknowledging Christ as the one and only Savior of mankind, is, according to the Bible, the only way to heaven and eternal life. But within the Church not all who profess Christ, have Christ. There are "multitudes" of professing Christians who feel secure about their eternal destiny but, unknown to them; they are in the "valley of [deception]." What are the causes of this alarming, soul damning, condition, and how can we know if we ourselves have been deceived about the true state of our spiritual condition? No matter how secure you believe you are in your faith this is a book you need to read. The Word of God commands us to "Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith, prove yourselves" (2 Corinthians 13:5). This command was given by God to every believer, and if you have never obeyed the Lord in this command then now is the time to do so. None of God's commands are optional. This book will aid you in obeying the Lord in this regard, and if yours was a genuine conversion experience the end result of your obedience will be a sweet confirmation and strengthening of your faith. On the other hand, should you be among the "multitudes" within the Church who are unknowingly deceived concerning your salvation experience then this book could mean the difference between heaven and hell!
