Subduction Zone Geodynamics

Subduction is a major process that plays a first-order role in the dynamics of the Earth. The sinking of cold lithosphere into the mantle is thought by many authors to be the most important source of energy for plates driving forces. It also deeply modifies the thermal and chemical structure of the mantle, producing arc volcanism and is responsible for the release of most of the seismic energy on Earth. There has been considerable achievements done during the past decades regarding the complex interactions between the various processes acting in subduction zones. This volume contains a collection of contributions that were presented in June 2007 in Montpellier (France) during a conference that gave a state of the art panorama and discussed the perspectives about "Subduction Zone Geodynamics". The papers included in this special volume offer a unique multidisciplinary picture of the recent research on subduction zones geodynamics. They are organized into five main topics: Subduction zone geodynamics, Seismic tomography and anisotropy, Great subduction zone earthquakes, Seismogenic zone characterization, Continental and ridge subduction processes. Each of the 13 papers collected in the present volume is primarily concerned with one of these topics. Geodynamic Processes in the Andes of Central Chile and Argentina

This Special Publication arises from the UNESCO-sponsored IGCP 586-Y project `The tectonics and geomorphology of the Andes (32°–34°S): interplay between short-term and long-term processes’. It includes state-of-the-art reviews and original articles from a multidisciplinary perspective that investigate the complex interactions of tectonics and surface processes in the subduction-related orogen of the Andes of central Chile and Argentina (c. 27° –39°S). It aims to improve our understanding of tectonic and landscape evolution of the Andean range at different time scales, as well as the mutual relationship between internal and external mechanisms in Cenozoic deformation, mountain building, topographic evolution, basin development and mega-landslides occurrence across the flat slab to normal subduction segments. After a decade of intense and productive scientific cooperation between geologists, geophysicists and geochemists the International Geodynamics Program formally ended on July 31, 1980. The scientific accomplishments in more than seventy scientific reports and in this series of Final Report volumes. The concept of the Geodynamics Program, as a natural successor to the Upper Mantle Project, developed during 1970 and 1971. The International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) and the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG) then sought support for the new program from the International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU). As a result the Inter-Union Commission on Geodynamics was established by ICSU to manage the International Geodynamics Program.
