Not illustrated. 1856 edition. Excerpt: ... NEW NOVEL, BY MISS BUNBUEY. Now ready at all the Libraries, in 3 vols., OUR OWN STORY. By SELINA BUNBURY, Author of "A Summer in Northern Europe," &c. OPINIONS OF THE PRESS. "This is a work of unquestionable genius. The story is one full of interest; it is managed with consummate skill, animated by characters touched by the hand of an artist, and well fitted to enlist the sympathy of the reader, while there is an eloquent simplicity in Miss Bunbury's style, equally remote from careless negligence and from straining after point and epigram. It is a work that will hardly be laid down unread when once taken up."--Morning Chronicle. 'This is a story of that meritorious class which, entering the world with the view of improving and amusing it, effectively accomplishes both purposes. Unlike the frivolous literature of the drawing-room, it does more than excite the curiosity of the reader by the interesting complication of events and adventures, and the animating development of the plot. It exhibits throughout a learned spirit of observation, and has much of both tender and lofty feeling. The vitality and versatility of original genius are apparent in every chapter: there is life in it. It abounds with deep thought and brilliant imagination, and displays, in equal proportions, humour, invention, and acute observation. Some of the scenes are pathetic in a very powerful degree, and such of them as are in the main of a lively and mirthful character are occasionally softened and relieved by touches of unexpected tenderness and tragic emotion."--Morning Post. "Written not only with great literary power, but with deep feeling, this interesting tale unfolds the inner realities of the soul's life, portraying in a style singularly effective the human...

Points of Passage

Book Description

Between 1880 and 1914 several million Eastern Europeans migrated West. Much is known about the immigration experience of Jews, Poles, Greeks, and others, notably in the United States. Yet, little is known about the paths of mass migration across “green borders” via European railway stations and ports to destinations in other continents. Ellis Island, literally a point of passage into America, has a much higher symbolic significance than the often inconspicuous departure stations, makeshift facilities for migrant masses at European railway stations and port cities, and former control posts along borders that were redrawn several times during the twentieth century. This volume focuses on the journeys of Jews from Eastern Europe through Germany, Britain, and Scandinavia between 1880 and 1914. The authors investigate various aspects of transmigration including medical controls, travel conditions, and the role of the steamship lines; and also review the rise of migration restrictions around the globe in the decades before 1914.

An Historical Geography of Europe

Book Description

A Historical Geography of Europe provides an analytical and explanatory account of European historical geography from classical times to the modern period, including the vast changes to landscape, settlements, population, and in political and cultural structures and character that have taken place since 1500. The text takes account of the volume of relevant research and literature that has been published over the past two or three decades, in order to achieve a coverage and synthesis of this very broad range of evidence and opinion, and has tried to engage with many of the main themes and debates to give a clear indication of changing ideas and interpretations of the subject.
