Geology and Mineral Resources of the Alberni-Nanaimo Lakes Sheet, Vancouver Island

Book Description

The Alberni-Nanaimo Lakes area lies at the southeastern end of the Vancouver Island Ranges and is characterized by fairly rugged topography accentuated by glaciation. The area covers one of a series of major geanticlinal structures constituting the structural fabric of the Wrangellia terrane of Vancouver Island. This report introduces the geological setting of the Alberni-Nanaimo Lakes area and describes its lithology and stratigraphy, geologic structure and tectonics from the Late Devonian to the Eocene, and metamorphism and alteration in the area's sedimentary and igneous formations. The final chapter reviews the history of mineral exploration in the area, outlines the regional metallogeny, and classifies the types of mineral deposit present in the area. The appendices contain tabulated data, descriptions of mineral occurrences and fossils, and a summary of assessment report work recorded within the area.

Geology and Mineral Resources of the Cowichan Lake Sheet, Vancouver Island

Book Description

The Cowichan Lake area lies at the southeastern end of the Vancouver Island Ranges and is characterized by fairly rugged topography accentuated by glaciation. The area is divided into two regions of differing structural style by a major thrust fault running along Cowichan Lake. This report introduces the geological setting of the areas and describes its lithology and stratigraphy, structure and tectonics from the Late Devonian to the Eocene, and the metamorphism and alteration of the area's sedimentary and igneous formations. The final section of the report reviews the history of mineral exploration in the area, outlines the regional metallogeny, and classifies the mineral deposits found in the area. The appendices include tabulated data, descriptions of mineral occurrences and fossils, and a summary of assessment report work recorded within the area.

Topics in Igneous Petrology

Book Description

The second half of the past century witnessed a remarkable paradigm shift in approach to the understanding of igneous rocks. Global literature records a change from a classical petrographic approach to emphasis on mineral chemistry, trace element characteristics, tectonic setting, phase relations, and theoretical simulation of magma generation and evolution processes. This book contains contributions by international experts in different fields of igneous petrology and presents an overview of recent developments. This book is dedicated to the late Dr Mihir K. Bose, former professor of the Department of Geology, Presidency College, Calcutta, India, who actively participated in the development of this new global view of igneous petrology.

The Geology of Southern Vancouver Island

Book Description

Vancouver Island's peaceful, bucolic nature betrays little of its violent natural history, but in Geology of Southern Vancouver Island fascinating events in the turbulent geological history and architecture of the Island are revealed.

Tectonics, Sedimentary Basins, and Provenance: A Celebration of the Career of William R. Dickinson

Book Description

Through a remarkable combination of intellect, self-confidence, engaging humility, and prodigious output of published work, William R. Dickinson influenced and challenged three generations of sedimentary geologists, igneous petrologists, tectonicists, sandstone petrologists, archaeologists, and other geoscientists. A key figure in the plate-tectonic revolution of the 1960s and 1970s, he explained how the distribution of sediments on Earth's surface could be traced to tectonic processes, and is widely recognized as a founder of modern sedimentary basin analysis. This volume consists of 31 chapters related to Dickinson's research interests; many of the authors are his former students, their students, and their students' students, demonstrating his continuing profound influence. The papers in this volume are an impressive tribute to the depth and breadth of Bill Dickinson's contributions to the geosciences.
