Hitler's Wehrmacht, 1935–1945

Book Description

An “impressively comprehensive” study of the Nazi military and its culpability in war crimes by “one of the foremost historians of World War II” (Stephen G. Fritz, author of Ostkrieg). Since the end of World War II, Germans have struggled with the legacy of the Wehrmacht—the unified armed forces mobilized by Adolf Hitler in 1935. Historians have vigorously debated whether the Wehrmacht's atrocities represented a break with the past or a continuation of Germany's military traditions. Now available for the first time in English, this meticulously researched yet accessible overview by eminent historian Rolf-Dieter Müller provides a comprehensive analysis of the Wehrmacht, illuminating its role in the horrors of the Third Reich. Müller examines the Wehrmacht's leadership principles, organization, equipment, and training, as well as the front-line experiences of soldiers, airmen, Waffen SS, foreign legionnaires, and volunteers. He skillfully demonstrates how state-directed propaganda and terror influenced the extent to which the militarized citizenry—or Volksgemeinschaft—was transformed under the pressure of total mobilization. Finally, Müller evaluates the army's conduct during the war, from blitzkrieg to the final surrender and charges of war crimes. Brief acts of resistance, such as an officers' “rebellion of conscience” in July 1944, embody the repressed, principled humanity of Germany's soldiers. But ultimately, Müller concludes, the Wehrmacht became the “steel guarantor” of the criminal Nazi regime.

Aircraft of the Luftwaffe, 1935-1945

Book Description

One of the most significant innovations in modern warfare has been the appearance and development of air power, a technology which demanded technical and financial investment on a whole new scale and which ultimately changed the fundamental nature of war itself. This book covers the history and development of the German air force from 1935 to 1945, with descriptions and illustrations of almost all of the Luftwaffe's airplanes, including fighters, jet fighters, dive-bombers, ground attackers, medium and heavy bombers, jet bombers, seaplanes, flying boats and carrier planes, transport and gliders, reconnaissance and training aircrafts, helicopters, and many futuristic projects and other rarities.

Gebirgsjäger

Book Description

The Gebirgsjäger were officially formed in 1935 following Hitler’s rejection of the Treaty of Versailles, although the required skills had been fostered in preparation through civilian climbing clubs. They were recruited predominantly from the southern mountainous parts of Germany – Wurtemburg and Bavaria – and from Austria, where Alpinism and mountain warfare had a long tradition. Rigorously trained in skiing, climbing and other demanding skills of mountain survival and combat, they formed an elite within the German army, distinguished by the distinctive Eidelweiss cap badge adopted in 1939. Jean-Denis Lepage gives a concise history of the Gebirgsjäger’s employment, which saw them in action on every front, from Lapland in the North to Tunisia in the south, and throught the war, from the invasion of Poland to the final defense of Germany. He then gives a detailed description of their uniforms and insignia, equipment, organization, training and tactics. The book is clearly illustrated throughout with over 170 of the author’s own line drawings.

Awarded for Bravery

Book Description

Nazi Germanys (1933-1945) reign of power over the world was one of the darkest times of mankind. Germany controlled almost all of Europe and had it not been for the fierce opposing countries, Germanys lack of supply, bad weather conditions, and other factors, Germany would have without difficulty subjugated Russia, and continued to conquer the rest of the world. The twelve years (1933-1945) of German history produced the countys first and only complete range of national orders and decorations, some of which had significant effects on future and upcoming awards of other countries. In the following pages of this reference book you will not only learn how these awards came to fruition, but you will also see period original photos of them being worn. You will also learn about what it took to receive each specific award, and clear color photos at the end of each chapter.Adolf Hitler issued and created a spectrum of awards, with over 200 different combat awards created during his reign of power. He used the awards of Germany for a two- fold effect, to boost his soldiers moral, and also to promote acts of needed bravery and heroism. He used the awards he created as a tool to continue his war machine, and giving out these awards worked to his benefit, and in some instances with great success. The soldiers of his armies continued on, and in most cases to their death, all in the Name of the Fhrer and Fatherland. When looking through the pages at these awards, it is perhaps not surprising that their outstanding quality, striking appearance, and sheer diversity has never since been matched in the field of Medals/Awards of any country. Some of the awards of Germany contained Diamonds, Platinum, Gold or Silver, and were stunning works of art. Not only the historic values of some of these awards are extremely rare, but the extrinsic value is almost equal. The beauty of these awards has not, or ever will be equaled.I hope you enjoy this reference book on Medals/Awards of Germany. It was my initial intent to create this reference book as a learning tool, but also for the collector as a guide to help in determining what is original. In this reference book you will find some never before published photos making it an enjoyable reference book to view. Our field of collecting is vast, therefore, making it quite challenging.
