Excerpt from Good and Bad Trade: An Inquiry Into the Causes, of Trade Fluctuations My present purpose is to examine certain elements in the modern economic organisation of the world, which appear to be intimately connected with the fluctuations. I shall not attempt to work back from a precise statisti cal analysis Of the fluctuations which the world has experienced to the causes of all the phenomena dis closed by such analysis. But I shall endeavour to Show what the effects of certain assumed economic causes would be, and it will, I think, be found that these calculated effects correspond very closely with the ob served features of the fluctuations. Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

Trieste Publishing has a massive catalogue of classic book titles. Our aim is to provide readers with the highest quality reproductions of fiction and non-fiction literature that has stood the test of time. The many thousands of books in our collection have been sourced from libraries and private collections around the world. The titles that Trieste Publishing has chosen to be part of the collection have been scanned to simulate the original. Our readers see the books the same way that their first readers did decades or a hundred or more years ago. Books from that period are often spoiled by imperfections that did not exist in the original. Imperfections could be in the form of blurred text, photographs, or missing pages. It is highly unlikely that this would occur with one of our books. Our extensive quality control ensures that the readers of Trieste Publishing's books will be delighted with their purchase. Our staff has thoroughly reviewed every page of all the books in the collection, repairing, or if necessary, rejecting titles that are not of the highest quality. This process ensures that the reader of one of Trieste Publishing's titles receives a volume that faithfully reproduces the original, and to the maximum degree possible, gives them the experience of owning the original work.We pride ourselves on not only creating a pathway to an extensive reservoir of books of the finest quality, but also providing value to every one of our readers. Generally, Trieste books are purchased singly - on demand, however they may also be purchased in bulk. Readers interested in bulk purchases are invited to contact us directly to enquire about our tailored bulk rates.

Excerpt from An Enquiry Into Some of the Causes of Fluctuations in Trade: A Lecture In Scotland our experience has been rather less unfavourable than elsewhere, and we have tided over the time with comparatively little inconvenience. Still we have been unmistakably conscious that the times have been bad; while in England great con cerns in the iron districts have collapsed, extensive mercantile houses have suspended, and industrial companies engaged in the manufactures of Yorkshire and Lancashire have gone into liquidation. In the United States the pressure has' been especially felt. In September, 1873, there arose a panic in the Stock Exchange of New York which spread throughout the country, and from that time till now the people have had to endure the miseries of Hard times. Every kind of industry has been affected.* Coal and iron works have been closed. Mills are partially at a stand. The works of new railways have been stopped, and the affairs of some of the old companies are in confusion. Vast numbers of unemployed parade the streets of the great cities, and bread riots have not been unknown. Even the tide of emigration has threat ened to turn.
