Corporate governance, namely the relationship between the ownership and control of firms, takes on new dimensions in the case of international joint ventures operating in the special context of China. The present study contributes a new examination of this relationship, firstly through its conceptual refinement, and secondly through original empirical research. It develops the concept of ownership as suited to joint ventures, in which account is taken of non-capital resourcing by foreign and Chinese partners.

In less than three decades, China has grown from playing a negligible role in international trade to being one of the world's largest exporters, a substantial importer of raw materials, intermediate outputs, and other goods, and both a recipient and source of foreign investment. Not surprisingly, China's economic dynamism has generated considerable attention and concern in the United States and beyond. While some analysts have warned of the potential pitfalls of China's rise—the loss of jobs, for example—others have highlighted the benefits of new market and investment opportunities for US firms. Bringing together an expert group of contributors, China's Growing Role in World Trade undertakes an empirical investigation of the effects of China's new status. The essays collected here provide detailed analyses of the microstructure of trade, the macroeconomic implications, sector-level issues, and foreign direct investment. This volume's careful examination of micro data in light of established economic theories clarifies a number of misconceptions, disproves some conventional wisdom, and documents data patterns that enhance our understanding of China's trade and what it may mean to the rest of the world.

The author, a practitioner in Shanghai, contends that all foreign investment in China will remain totally at risk until a broad range of enormous administrative lacunae are filled with responsible, reliable legal norms. These gaps in the system-all clearly analyzed and measured her for the reader-include the lack of clear delineation between legal and policy norms, the breadth of discretion accorded to bodies charged with legal interpretation and implementation, the limited scope of judicial review, and resulting problems of legislative inconsistency and haphazard legal enforcement. This unique annotated bibliography contains the most important studies of the Chinese business environment, comprising almost 1000 references to articles published in English-language journals in the past fifteen years or so. The editors have sought to focus on those writings that deal fairly directly with the impact of the Chinese business environment on foreign firms doing business in China. Each work is fully referenced in a standard format, has a brief description of its subject matter and has been given a classification code ensuring quick and easy identification of all articles on any given subject. This book will serve as a reference book for scholars and researchers of Asian studies - China most particularly - and international business. Senior executives and middle level managers of multinational corporations who have been operating in, or who wish to business in and with China would also find this a useful and rich source of information.

China's breathtaking economic growth, has often led observers to assume that the country's economic system has been transformed into a capitalist economy dominated by private enterprise. Although China's reliance on private enterprise and market-based incentives has been growing, and the CCP's treatment of private enterprises and entrepreneurs has been changing, it would be a mistake to minimize the current role of the State and the CCP in shaping economic outcomes in China and beyond. The Chinese government and state-owned enterprises (SOEs) remain potent economic forces. Indeed, some of China's SOEs are among the largest firms in China and the world. They are major investors in foreign countries. They have been involved in some of the largest initial public offerings in recent years and remain the controlling owners of many major firms listed on Chinese and foreign stock exchanges.

During the past decade, transnational education has grown rapidly and become a key initiative of internationalization of higher education. In China, one of the main forms of transnational education is Chinese-foreign Cooperation in Running Schools (CFCRS). In May 2017, there were 2545 CFCRS institutions and programs approved by the Chinese government. There are about 560,000 CFCRS students nationwide, among which 460,000 are in higher education, while graduate numbers have exceeded 1.6 million. CFCRS has attracted more and more attention, and related studies have been increasing over the years. This book contains a comprehensive introduction and in-depth study on CFCRS; and includes comparative studies on the development of international branch campuses of several countries. This volume was originally published as a special issue of Chinese Education and Societies.
