The act of graffiti has long been associated with the realm of vandalism. When planned complex aesthetic designs started to emerge in New York City during the 1970s, graffiti began to blur the realms of what is vandalism and what is fine art. Conceptual ideas lay down by fine artists, such as Marcel Duchamp and Andy Warhol, and graffiti's complex subculture combined to create a controversial art form. This collection of unique works by 150 Los Angeles graffiti and tattoo artists represents an unprecedented collaboration across the city’s diverse artistic landscape. Many graffiti artists carry sketchbooks, called black books, and they ask crew members and others whose work they admire to inscribe their books with lettering or drawings. A few years ago, the Getty Research Institute invited artists, including Angst, Axis, Big Sleeps, Chaz, Cre8, Defer, EyeOne, Fishe, Heaven, Hyde, Look, ManOne, and Prime, to consider the idea of a citywide graffiti black book. During visits to the Getty Center, the artists viewed rare books related to calligraphy and letterforms, including works by Albrecht Dürer and Leonardo da Vinci. The artists instantly recognized the connections to their own practices and were particularly drawn to a liber amicorum (book of friends), a form of autograph book popular in the seventeenth century. Passed from hand to hand, it was filled with signatures, poetry, and coats of arms, like a black book from another era. Inspired by this meeting of minds across centuries, these artists became both creators and curators, crafting their own pages and inviting others to contribute. Eventually 150 Los Angeles artists decorated 143 individual pages. These were bound together into an exquisite artists’ book that became known as the Getty Graffiti Black Book. This publication reproduces each page from the original artists’ book and recounts the story of an unprecedented collaboration across the diverse artistic landscape of Los Angeles.

He appeared in the historic 1982 PBS documentary Style Wars, which tracks subway graffiti art in New York. As the Creative Director of hip hop mogul Russell Simmons' Def Jam Recordings, he co-founded the Drawing Board, the label's in-house visual design firm. He exhibits, lectures, and teaches art workshops at institutions all over the US and Canada. He coauthored DEFinition: The Art and Design of Hip-Hop, published by Harper-Collins and designed Def Jam Recordings: The First 25 Years of the Last Great Record Label, published by Rizzoli.

The author interviewed people affected on a daily basis by the murals at sites around the metropolitan area, including property owners who have welcomed the muralists in hopes that the artwork would serve as a deterrent to vandalism--and provide a more aesthetically pleasing alternative to buffing. This analysis, informed by cultural Marxism and supported by street photography, suggests a radical departure from traditional New York City policy: instead of spending money exclusively on the elimination of illegal graffiti, resources should also be devoted to the creation of graffiti murals. How hip-hop culture and graffiti electrified the art of Jean-Michel Basquiat and his contemporaries in 1980s New York In the early 1980s, art and writing labeled as graffiti began to transition from New York City walls and subway trains onto canvas and into art galleries.
