My book of stories and poems are taken from the lives of my family and friends. For the most part, they are the subjects that will cheer up those that are sad and think only they have had troubles in this life. I hope it will bring a smile to your face, and sometimes may you also laugh out loud. Many of the poems were written in the wee hours when I awakened with something on my mind that I thought would take a friend's troubles off her mind. Many are written on subjects suggested by those that I worked with. I decided to one day write this book because I think we all should leave a little bit of ourself for future generations to know what life was like when we felt free. You will notice that many of the poems are about freedom, love of country, and the desire to preserve that which our forefathers fought and died for when we claimed our birthright promised to Abraham. Happiness is also what I wish for those of you to find in my simple words of wisdom in the form of verse, If by chance you that read get half as much pleasure reading as I did writing, I feel I have accomplished what I set out to do.

The celebrated author of Legends of the Fall delivers “three novellas as dark as they are exuberant” and linked by the lyrics of Patsy Cline (Publishers Weekly, starred review). The three stories in The Farmer’s Daughter are as different as they are unforgettable. Written in the voice of a home-schooled fifteen-year-old girl in rural Montana, the title novella introduces an extraordinary character who must draw on her untapped strength and resilience when she encounters unexpected brutality. In another, Harrison’s beloved recurring character Brown Dog, still looking for love, escapes from Canada back to the States on the tour bus of an Indian rock band called Thunderskins. And finally, a retired werewolf, misdiagnosed with a rare blood disorder brought on by the bite of a Mexican hummingbird, attempts to lead a normal life but is nevertheless plagued by hazy, feverish episodes of epic lust, physical appetite, athletic exertions, and outbursts of violence under the full moon. The Farmer’s Daughter is a memorable portrait of three decidedly unconventional American lives. With wit, poignancy, and an unbounded love for his characters, “Harrison shows he is still at the top of his game with these compressed gems. Taken together, they present another fine accomplishment in a storied career” (Publishers Weekly, starred review). “Readers with a fondness for Hemingway’s Michigan stories or Cormac McCarthy’s spare regional novels will also find these tales much to their liking. Highly recommended.” —Donna Bettencourt, Library Journal (starred review)

With the warmth and humor we've come to know, the creator and host of A Prairie Home Companion shares his own remarkable story. In That Time of Year, Garrison Keillor looks back on his life and recounts how a Brethren boy with writerly ambitions grew up in a small town on the Mississippi in the 1950s and, seeing three good friends die young, turned to comedy and radio. Through a series of unreasonable lucky breaks, he founded A Prairie Home Companion and put himself in line for a good life, including mistakes, regrets, and a few medical adventures. PHC lasted forty-two years, 1,557 shows, and enjoyed the freedom to do as it pleased for three or four million listeners every Saturday at 5 p.m. Central. He got to sing with Emmylou Harris and Renée Fleming and once sang two songs to the U.S. Supreme Court. He played a private eye and a cowboy, gave the news from his hometown, Lake Wobegon, and met Somali cabdrivers who’d learned English from listening to the show. He wrote bestselling novels, won a Grammy and a National Humanities Medal, and made a movie with Robert Altman with an alarming amount of improvisation. He says, “I was unemployable and managed to invent work for myself that I loved all my life, and on top of that I married well. That’s the secret, work and love. And I chose the right ancestors, impoverished Scots and Yorkshire farmers, good workers. I’m heading for eighty, and I still get up to write before dawn every day.”

Prelude Though I was tagged a failure, everyone saw my little reactions as hysterical. The few times I responded to the callousness of people, I was being melodramatic, and when I didnt, I was being myself . . . the fool. I would have expected to be the apple of my dads eye, considering he claimed he loved my mum so much, till he found out she was a cheat, but what was my crime in my mums unfaithfulness? I barely knew her. The only crime I committed for being abused, trampled on, humiliated, almost abandoned, and so on in Oxford Dictionarys strongest negative terms was being my mothers child. I am a failure today because Mrs Funmi Jaxson brought me to life. While a lot of ladies wore designer lipsticks, compact powders, mascaras, amongst so many others as daily make-up, I was forced to permanently be teary-eyed while wearing my snotty nose. Well, I guess I got my own make-up for free. Even my sense of humour could not stop the emotions from flowing excessively while others laughed and I cried for hours, wondering how I missed the jokes. I guess when the joke is on you, its not so funny anyway. I couldnt help but wonder what made a lot of people smile and look content when they looked into the mirror. For me, I saw absolutely nothing. The strongest people in life are those we stand tall despite the hurdles in their lives. Truth is, success doesnt only come with a price; it has determination glued to it; they are intertwined. Failure isnt failing at what you do; its accepting the title failure, wallowing in it, and making it a comfort zone. Turns out that disbelieving in the power of our dreams and failing to pursue them with a passion is the worst form of failure. Failures are often stepping stones to success. Then it becomes our choice to either learn from them and develop ourselves or make choices that will break us further. Imagine life as an adventure we have to stumble fearlessly into with more than a flicker of hope. Most successful people today didnt make it easily. They fell, dusted themselves up, and tried again more than a couple of times. The trick is fixing your gaze on the prize and not the present circumstances. If you know where you are heading, failure wont set you back. Life never promised anyone perfection. It only promised to give us a chance which will eventually allow us to make decisions that will reshape who we are negatively or positively . . . Miss Carim, 2013. Let yesterday be a tool to help shape your today when preparing for tomorrow . . . Miss Carim, 2013.
