Chinese literature from 1121 B.C. also provides a written description of dogs similar to Great Danes. One of the tallest dog breeds in the world, the Great Dane could never be described as diminutive in stature. Although the breed is often characterized alongside other giant dog breeds like the Old English Mastiff, New Foundland and the Saint Bernard, in practice it is often a Great Dane that is announced to be the tallest living dog in any one year.
