With Governor Arguello, 'owner of the vessel, Captain Cooper became involved in a lawsuit with the governor. The dispute was finally referred to arbitrators, who decided that the captain was entitled to from the governor in settlement of amounts due him by contract. During '1846 Captain Cooper made a voyage to Peru and in 1849 he went to China as master of the Eveline. From 1850 until some time in the '6os he made his home in Monterey, but about the year 1865 he removed to San Francisco and there in 1872 his eventful life came to an end. In his death the state lost one of its earliest American settlers, a man of decided talent, rare executive ability and unsurpassed knowledge of seacraft.
