Welcome to GRID 2000, the first annual IEEE/ACM international workshop on grid computing sponsored by the IEEE Computer Society’s Task Force on Cluster Computing (TFCC) and the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). The workshop has received generous sponsorship from the European Grid Forum (eGrid), the EuroTools SIG on Metacomputing, Microsoft Research (USA), Sun Microsystems (USA), and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (India). It is a sign of the current high levels of interest and activity in Grid computing that we have had contributions to the workshop from researchers and developers in Australia, Austria, Canada, France, Germany, Greece, India, Italy, Japan, Korea, The Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, UK, and USA. It is our pleasure and honor to present the first annual international Grid computing meeting program and the proceedings. The Grid: A New Network Computing Infrastructure The growing popularity of the Internet along with the availability of powerful computers and high speed networks as low cost commodity components are helping to change the way we do computing. These new technologies are enabling the coupling of a wide variety of geographically distributed resources, such as parallel supercomputers, storage systems, data sources, and special devices, that can then be used as a unified resource and thus form what is popularly known as the “Grids”.

The growth of the Internet and the availability of powerful computers and hi- speed networks as low-cost commodity components are changing the way we do computing. These new technologies have enabled the clustering of a wide variety of geographically distributed resources, such as supercomputers, storage systems, data sources, and special devices and services, which can then be used as a uni?ed resource. Furthermore, they have enabled seamless access to and interaction among these distributed resources, services, applications, and data. The new paradigm that has evolved is popularly termed “Grid computing”. Grid computing and the utilization of the global Grid infrastructure have presented signi?cant challenges at all levels, including application development, progr- ming models, systems, infrastructures and services, networking, and security, and have led to the development of a global research community. Grid 2002 is the third in a series of workshops developed to provide a - rum for this growing Grid Computing research community. Grid 2000, the ?rst workshop in the series, was chaired by Rajkumar Buyya and Mark Baker, and was held in conjunction with HiPC 2002 in Bangalore, India. Grid 2001 (Chair: Craig A. Lee) and Grid 2002 were held in conjunction with Supercomputing, the world’s premier meeting for high-performance computing.

Book Description

The term "grid computing" is based on an analogy with the electrical power grid: computing capabilities should be ubiquitous and easy to use. While the development of what we now call grid computing is, in many ways, part of a natural progression of work done in the last decade, what's special about it is that all of its enabling technologies are converging at once: (1) a widely - ployed, network infrastructure will connect virtually every device in the world, (2) an interface technology is widely understood and embraced by virtually every segment of science, technology, commerce, and society, and (3) there is a wi- spread, and growing, understanding of the properties, capabilities, and services that are necessary and possible to utilize this infrastructure. Information services and resource brokers will allow the dynamic sharing of resources for applications large and small and enable virtual organizations. These properties, capabilities, and services will be used in different contexts to enable different styles of c- puting such as Internet computing and Peer-to-Peer computing. To facilitate the adoption of standard practices, the Global Grid Forum (www. gridforum. org) was formed to identify common requirements and push for eventual standardization. The phenomenal growth of grid computing and related topics has created the need for this workshop as a venue to present the latest research. This year's workshop builds on the success of last year's.

Grid and cooperative computing has emerged as a new frontier of information tech- logy. It aims to share and coordinate distributed and heterogeneous network resources forbetterperformanceandfunctionalitythatcanotherwisenotbeachieved.Thisvolume contains the papers presented at the 2nd International Workshop on Grid and Coope- tive Computing, GCC 2003, which was held in Shanghai, P.R. China, during December 7–10, 2003. GCC is designed to serve as a forum to present current and future work as well as to exchange research ideas among researchers, developers, practitioners, and usersinGridcomputing,Webservicesandcooperativecomputing,includingtheoryand applications. For this workshop, we received over 550 paper submissions from 22 countries and regions. All the papers were peer-reviewed in depth and qualitatively graded on their relevance, originality, signi?cance, presentation, and the overall appropriateness of their acceptance. Any concerns raised were discussed by the program committee. The or- nizing committee selected 176 papers for conference presentation (full papers) and 173 submissions for poster presentation (short papers).The papers included herein represent the forefront of research from China, USA, UK, Canada, Switzerland, Japan, Aust- lia, India, Korea, Singapore, Brazil, Norway, Greece, Iran, Turkey, Oman, Pakistan and other countries. Performance Analysis and Grid Computing

Past and current research in computer performance analysis has focused primarily on dedicated parallel machines. However, future applications in the area of high-performance computing will not only use individual parallel systems but a large set of networked resources. This scenario of computational and data Grids is attracting a great deal of attention from both computer and computational scientists. In addition to the inherent complexity of parallel machines, the sharing and transparency of the available resources introduces new challenges on performance analysis, techniques, and systems. In order to meet those challenges, a multi-disciplinary approach to the multi-faceted problems of performance is required. New degrees of freedom will come into play with a direct impact on the performance of Grid computing, including wide-area network performance, quality-of-service (QoS), heterogeneity, and middleware systems, to mention only a few.

On behalf of the Program Committee, it is a pleasure for us to introduce the proceedings of the 1st European Across Grids Conference. This event was held in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, February 13-14, 2003. The conference,organized by the University of Santiago (USC), the University of A Coruna (UDC) and the Super computing Center of Galicia (CESGA), was promoted by the European Cross Grid project and supported by the Grid Start Cluster. The idea of organizing this event was born within the Cross Grid community. Cross Grid is developing its middleware, tools and applications in collaboration with Data Grid and Grid Lab and is open to collaboration with other Grid projects. USC, UDC and CESGA enthusiastically supported the conference idea. We consider the Across Grids Conference to be an important contribution to the objectives of the Grid Start project. The aim of this 1st European Across Grids Conference was to forge annual forum in which researchers linked to European projects could present their research results in the field of Grid computing. This conference does not tend to replace the Global Grid Forum. However, we do find that research being conducted within European projects deserves a special meeting in which all researchers participating in the Grid development challenge can exchange ideas, experiences and, chiefly, results. We would like the effort of organizing this forum to find continuity in the following years in other European cities. Our first interest was to bring together as many European Grid projects as possible. We believe we have been successful in attaining this aim. Papers and posters from Data Grid, Cross Grid, Damien, Data TAG, Grid Way and Grid Lab were presented, as well as results of research funded by national Grid projects, including NORDUGRID and several Spanish Grid initiatives, such as Rede Grid.
