The stories collected by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm in the early 19th century reflected life as known to the German people of the time - fantastic, yet often unpredictable and pernicious. Patriotic folklorists, they began their collection of tales with the intent of preserving the endangered German oral tradition from a Napoleonic rule intent on suppressing local culture. From their earliest release and translation, conservative parents and ecclesiastics disparaged the tales for their vestigial, raw, Gothic content and the brothers and a myriad of editors began to soften them to demure morality and sweetness to make appeal to the upper classes what began as earthy peasant fare. This is no such revision, sanitized of objectionable material; these are the grimmest. Cannibalism, child abuse, dismemberment, slaughter of innocents, the walking dead & deals with the devil are all prevalent in these lesser-known works of the brothers Grimm, here lushly illustrated for the sick little monkey that is your inner child. Featuring 94 illustrations by Terry Beal, Benchacco, Jon Ferril, Luc Hebert, Kelly Levy, Kathryn McLaughlin, Karen Petroff, Katy Rose & Cyrus Rua.

In this mischievous and utterly original debut, Hansel and Gretel walk out of their own story and into eight other classic Grimm-inspired tales. As readers follow the siblings through a forest brimming with menacing foes, they learn the true story behind (and beyond) the bread crumbs, edible houses, and outwitted witches. Fairy tales have never been more irreverent or subversive as Hansel and Gretel learn to take charge of their destinies and become the clever architects of their own happily ever after.

From Newbery Honor-winning, New York Times bestselling author Adam Gidwitz Cover may vary Did you know that Cinderella’s stepsisters got their eyes pecked out by birds? Really. And that Rumpelstiltskin ripped himself in half? And that in “The Mouse, the Bird, and the Sausage,” a mouse, a bird, and a sausage all talk to each other? (Okay, I guess that one’s not that grim.) Those are the real fairy tales. But they have nothing on the fairy tales in this book. For more twisted tales look for A Tale Dark and Grimm and In a Glass Grimmly. * “Underneath the gore, the wit, and the trips to Hell and back, this book makes it clearer than ever that Gidwitz truly cares about the kids he writes for.” —Publishers Weekly starred review “Entertaining story-mongering, with traditional and original tropes artfully intertwined.”—Kirkus Reviews “As innovative as they are traditional, the stories maintain clear connections with traditional Grimm tales while creatively connecting to the narrative, and all the while keeping the proceedings undeniably grisly and lurid. . . .Readers will rejoice.”—School Library Journal

Doodle something darker. The fairy tales of Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm are a little grimmer than the average fairy tale—Red Riding Hood lost in the woods with the big bad wolf; Hansel and Gretel lured into the trap of the evil witch; poor Rapunzel confined to solitude. With their vivid imagery and symbolism, these stories beg for illustrations, and Really Grimm’s Doodle Diaries helps novice artists doodle their own. With prompts like “Draw something horrid here,” and “Find out who will survive the terror of the deep dark woods,” this is one doodle book that is sure to leave your spine tingling. Complete with easy-to-follow instructions and plenty of space for experimentation, the chances for failure are grim.
