This publication addresses the sampling of soil and vegetation in terrestrial ecosystems, including agricultural, forest and urban environments, contaminated with radionuclides from events such as radiation accidents, radiological incidents and former nuclear activities. It considers sampling strategies and programmes, which are relevant for both emergency and existing exposure situations. Practical advice is provided on the design and implementation of sampling programmes for soil and vegetation within the framework of environmental monitoring. Examples of best practice on the formulation of optimized sampling strategies for different exposure situations are given based on the experience and lessons learned from implementation of past and existing programmes.

The public hearings on The Nature of Radioactive Fallout and Its Effects on Man had their origin in studies initiated over a year ago -- in July 1956 -- by the staff of the Joint Committee on the general subject of long-term radiation hazards, both from the military and peacetime atomic energy program. During the summer recess, following the conclusion of the 84th Congress, the staff assembled background materials on fallout, with primary emphasis on the research aspects. Following official announcement of the hearings in March of this year a detailed technical outline describing the proposed scope and subject matter of the hearings was prepared by the staff. On April 18, 1957, a Special Subcommittee on Radiation under the chairmanship of Representative Chet Holifield of California was established to conduct the hearings and to look into radiation problems in general. The hearings, which were all open to the public, were held on May 27-29 and June 3-7, and covered the major aspects of the fallout problem from its inception in nuclear weapons explosions to its effects on man. In all, some 50 witnesses either appeared personally before the committee or submitted statements for the record. The staff has prepared a summary analysis of the hearings which is aimed at pointing up the more significant information which emerged from the hearings. This analysis does not cover all points that were discussed in the hearings. An effort was made to describe the general areas of agreement which developed and to delineate those areas in which unresolved questions still exist. - Foreword.

This book reports the results from on-site research into radioactive cesium contamination in various agricultural systems affected by the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident that occurred in March 2011. This is the second volume from the research groups formed in the Graduate School of Agricultural and Life Sciences of The University of Tokyo who have published the initial data in their first volume. In this book, additional data collected in the subsequent years are presented to show how the radioactivity level in agricultural products and their growing environments have changed with time. The data clarify the route by which radioactive materials entered agricultural products and their movement among different components (e.g., soil, water, and trees) within an environmental system (e.g., forests). The book consists of various topics, including radioactivity inspection of food products; decontamination trials for rice and livestock production; the state of contamination in wild animals and birds, trees, mushrooms, and timber; the dynamics of radioactivity distribution in mountain and paddy fields; damage incurred by the forestry and fishery industries; and the change in consumers’ minds. The last chapter introduces a real-time radioisotope imaging system, the forefront technique to visualize actual movement of cesium in soil and in plants. This is the only book to provide systematic data about the actual change of radioactivity, and thus is of great value for all researchers who wish to understand the effect of radioactive fallout on agriculture. The project is ongoing; the research groups continue their work in the field for further evaluation of the long-term effects.

The explosion on 26 April 1986 at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant and the consequent reactor fire resulted in an unprecedented release of radioactive material from a nuclear reactor and adverse consequences for the public and the environment. Although the accident occurred nearly two decades ago, controversy still surrounds the real impact of the disaster. Therefore the IAEA, in cooperation with other UN bodies, the World Bank, as well as the competent authorities of Belarus, the Russian Federation and Ukraine, established the Chernobyl Forum in 2003. The mission of the Forum was to generate 'authoritative consensual statements' on the environmental consequences and health effects attributable to radiation exposure arising from the accident as well as to provide advice on environmental remediation and special health care programmes, and to suggest areas in which further research is required. This report presents the findings and recommendations of the Chernobyl Forum concerning the environmental effects of the Chernobyl accident.
