Frank Harrison Canaday Scrapbook

Book Description

Scrapbook compiled by student Frank Harrison Canaday, during his undergraduate years at Harvard from 1910 to 1914. It predominately consists of mementos from Canaday's academic studies and extracurricular activities beginning with Canaday's departure from his home in New Castle, Indiana for Harvard and concluding with his graduation. Included are photographs of fellow Harvard students, notably future Harvard President James B. Conant, sitting in their student rooms or outdoors. Other photographs depict Harvard sporting events, such as a Harvard/Brown football game, Harvard rowing crew, and the Harvard track team. The pictures also consist of Harvard Yard from Canaday's room in Thayer Hall, the demolition of Gore Hall, Canaday's baccalaureate commencement, and his visits home to Indiana. Additionally, there are various pieces of Harvard student ephemera, such as tickets from Harvard/Yale and Harvard/Dartmouth football games, summonses from Harvard professors and President Albert Lowell, receipts from the Bursar's office, cards from student social events, dance cards, and a copy of "Tips for Freshies." Material related to Harvard societies, particularly Harvard Delta Upsilon, Signet Club, Harvard Dramatic Club, and Harvard Memorial Society, are also included. Also featured are examination papers for Canaday's history, French, German, and philosophy courses, programs from Boston theater productions, newspaper clippings covering Harvard life and events, and articles written by Canaday while on the staff of the Harvard Crimson and the Boston Herald, where he covered Harvard activities. Of particular note are a letter written to Canaday from James B. Conant welcoming him to the Delta Upsilon fraternity, a letter written by famed psychology professor Hugo Münsterberg inviting Canaday to attend his psychological seminary, and a holiday greetings card from President Albert Lowell.
