This book explains how telemedicine can offer solutions capable of improving the care and survival rates of cancer patients and can also help patients to live a normal life in spite of their condition. Different fields of application – community, hospital and home based – are examined, and detailed attention is paid to the use of tele-oncology in rural/extreme rural settings and in developing countries. The impact of new technologies and the opportunities afforded by the social web are both discussed. The concluding chapters consider eLearning in relation to cancer care and assess the scope for education to improve prevention. No medical condition can shatter people’s lives as cancer does today and the need to develop strategies to reduce the disease burden and improve quality of life is paramount. Readers will find this new volume in Springer’s TELe Health series to be a rich source of information on the important contribution that can be made by telemedicine in achieving these goals.

This book comprehensively discusses the background to the passing of India's revolutionary Mental Healthcare Act, 2017, offering a detailed description of the Act itself and a rigorous analysis in the context of the CRPD and the World Health Organization (WHO) standards for mental health law. It examines the fine balance, between complying with the CRPD while still delivering practical, humane, and implementable legislation. It explores how this legislation was shaped by the WHO standards and provides insights into areas where the Indian legislators deviated from these guidelines and why. Taking India as an example, it highlights what is possible in other low- and middle-income countries. Further it covers key issues in mental health, identifying potential competing interests and exploring the difficulties and limitations of international guidelines. The book is a valuable resource for psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, non-governmental organizations and all mental healthcare workers in India and anyone studying human rights law.

The Regulations also cover certificates applicable to international travel and transport, and requirements for international ports, airports and ground crossings.

Public health is a core element of governments' attempts to improve and promote the health and welfare of their citizens. Unfortunately, there is evidence that current public health systems and services are not able to cope well with the modern challenges - new technologies, globalization, migration, bioterrorism, etc. In view of this, the WHO Western Pacific Region initiated studies on essential public health functions (EPHFs) in Fiji, Malaysia, and Vietnam. By drawing on research in other parts of the world, a framework and nine EPHFs were derived for these case studies. These nine EPHFs define more clearly and systematically the core areas of public health work for which governments are ultimately responsible. These EPHFs are also considered appropriate for further consultation and use in the Western Pacific Region. This publication is aimed at providing EPHF concepts and ideas that will help countries ensure that they develop and sustain a comprehensive approach to public health. The case studies may also provide ideas for other countries on methods that could be used to examine the current functioning of EPHFs and on different approaches for strengthening these essential functions in different health systems.
