Heart and Soul (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Heart and Soul There are various kinds and degrees of feeling that go under the name of love and nothing in life is more interesting or more vitally important to study and understand. But in this preliminary summary it is enough to signal its existence as one of the factors in the problem of life. It may be just as well to note, in passing, that mothers are to be found Whose love for their chil dren is not so completely unselfish. Mothers are to be found who care very little about their chil dren. Mothers are to be found who regard chil dren as a nuisance and a disadvantage and prefer to be without them. That will be found to be one of the curious side-lights of the problem when time comes to discuss it. It does not alter the fact, however, that love exists, that the true mother's love of her child is the most complete and universal illustration of it. Songs of the Heart and Soul (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Songs of the Heart and Soul Proem I can't recall what age I was when rhymes began to play Their fancies in my heart and brain, - "I've always been that way"; And 'way back there in early youth the very air to me In Summer time was thick with sounds of sweetest harmony. I loved the haunts of nature, and I loved the songs of birds; I loved the wooded pasture lands, where fed the quiet herds; I loved the dusk of country lanes, when Summer's day was gone; I loved the night with all its stars, I loved the breath of dawn. The cooing dove, the bobolink, the blue-bird and the thrush Made melody all day for me; and in the evening's hush The whip-poor-will, the crickets, and the frogs down by the stream Lulled me to sleep, and filled my soul with many a happy dream. Heart and Soul

Book Description

Excerpt from Heart and Soul: A Novel Of what happened after this I recollect nothing till I found myself transplanted to my new home in the Northwest. Many years later, when hunting the shelves of a library for information about my native isle, I learned of an insurrection of slaves in a por tion of Cuba during the year 1844. A full account was given in grewsome detail of the massacre at the Selva Alegre plantation, in which perished Augustin Fremont, Esq., formerly of South Carolina, his wife and baby, his aged father and his overseer. Only one member of the family survived, it stated - an infant boy, hidden for days by a faithful attend ant. This massacre was recorded as an instance of special ingratitude and bloodthirstiness on the part of the misguided blacks, the Fremont plantation having been noted for the kind treatment of its slaves and the benevolent, paternal character of its ad ministration. A Book of Cambridge Verse (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold.
