International Thermodynamic Tables of the Fluid State Helium-4

Book Description

International Thermodynamic Tables of the Fluid State Helium-4 presents the IUPAC Thermodynamic Tables for the thermodynamic properties of helium. The IUPAC Thermodynamic Tables Project has therefore encouraged the critical analysis of the available thermodynamic measurements for helium and their synthesis into tables. This book is divided into three chapters. The first chapter discusses the experimental results and compares with the equations used to generate the tables. These equations are supplemented by a vapor pressure equation, which represents the 1958 He-4 scale of temperature that is defined in terms of the vapor pressure of helium-4. The second chapter are devoted to various equation of state used for the determination of thermodynamic properties. The third chapter contains IUPAC Tables, including their construction, limits, use, and accuracy. This book will be of value to physical chemists and researchers in the field.

The Thermodynamic Properties of Solid and Fluid Helium-3 and Helium-4 Above 3 K at High Densities

Book Description

Measurements have been made of the specific heat at constant volume of solid He-3 from 3 K up to the melting point at a number of different densities corresponding to pressures up to 2000 atm. The measurements have been extended through the melting region at constant volume up to 29 K in the fluid phase. For comparison similar measurements have been made on He-4 at four different densities. By combining these data with the p-V-T data of Mills + Grilly (1955) and Grilly + Mills (1959), the complete thermodynamic properties of the solids have been derived in the relevant pressure and temperature range. The results can be understood semi-quantitatively in terms of the zero-point energy of the solids and a quasi-harmonic model of the lattice vibrations. A brief discussion of the specific heat of the fluid phase is also given. (Author).
