Historical Memoirs of My Own Time (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Historical Memoirs of My Own Time The Quarterly Review, after stating that I have egregiously mistaken the amount of my resources and of my ability, compares me, for incapacity and self-importance, to P. P. Clerk of this Parish, whose Memoirs furnish so much ludicrous entertainment in the works of Pope: while the British Critic characterizes the book as mere gossip, and languid iinbecility. It would not become me to appreciate the rank which my own understanding holds in the scale of intellect: but, either the public does not think so meanly of the Historical Memoirs, and their author, or they manifest a most incorrigible oh stinacy and inattention to the friendly admonitions reiterated by their literary guides, who exert every endeavour to prevent their readers from throwing away eighteen shillings on a new edi tion in octavo of the daily advertiser. Now I can assure these gentlemen, that the first edition of this imbecile work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Memoirs of My Own Times, Vol. 1 of 3 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Memoirs of My Own Times, Vol. 1 of 3 The intentions, the integrity, and independence of my pen will, I hope, defend its humble productions from the unmerited fate of its persecuted master. I am, however, sensible, that the anticipations excited by these Memoirs, may be unpropitious to their effect, interspersed even as they are with public dpcuments and official correspondence of interesting character; yet I do promise myself that the transactions, anecdotes, facts, and reflections, which I re cord, will not be deemed altogether unworthy the attention of the citizen, the soldier, the patriot, and the statesman. Memoirs of His Own Time, Vol. 1 of 2

Book Description

Excerpt from Memoirs of His Own Time, Vol. 1 of 2: Including the Revolution, the Empire, and the Restoration The inaccuracy and want of truth in the multi tude of private Memoirs, with which we have been inundated, and with which cotemporary history was in a manner overwhelmed, had inspired me with insurmountable disgust. It seemed to me that my testimony would be a useless and slender tribute, and would be lost in that chaos into which so many rash Opinions, so many false statements, so many calumnies, dictated by the spirit of' re venge, will perhaps never suffer the light of truth to penetrate. In fact the number of those Memoirs is but very inconsiderable of which my honorable friend, the count de Segur, has given us so perfect a model. In venturing to imitate him. I yield to his counsels as well as to his warm solicitations. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Posthumous Memoirs of His Own Time (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Posthumous Memoirs of His Own Time Never, I believe, did any literary work procure for its author a more numerous list of powerful and inveterate enemies, than were produced by those Memoirs of my own Time. The queen, the regent, and the princesses of the royal family, far from being satis fied with a portrait of George the Third, which, if it errs, can only be censured for presenting a too favourable likeness, were incensed at the freedom with which I had commented on the peace of 1763, aswell as at the personal disclosures respecting the king himself, scattered throughout the memoirs. As little did the admirers or fol lowers of Pitt approve my picture of that minister, though, in my opinion, rather a flattering resemblance: while Fox's partisans exhi bited the most violent resentment at my strictures on his moral, as well as on his political character. The just and impartial likeness of Charles Jenkinson displeased the first lord of the treasury, his son. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
