Excerpt from Historical Records of the First Regiment of Militia: Or Third West York Light Infantry In performing this work, it has been my endeavour to carry out what I believe to have been the original intention Of the Order quoted at the commencement Of this Preface, by render ing it complete in every possible detail likely at any time to be of service. I have also done my best to make it accurate and reliable, and at the same time to arrange all the details so as to be clear and precise, with the view of, in a great measure, taking the place of the large accumulation Of Correspondence and Returns which go to form the greater portion of a regiment's records, and out Of which it is difficult to ascertain any required particulars without great labour and loss Of time. It would have been comparatively easy to compile a history Of more inte rest to the general reader, in less than half the time, by omitting many of the details and references here given the Appendices alone having required for their preparation more than double the time occupied by the remainder of the book.
