Historical Romances of William Harrison Ainsworth, Vol. 1 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Historical Romances of William Harrison Ainsworth, Vol. 1 On the ninth of November, 1761, there was great jubilation in the City of London. On that day, the Right Hon. Sir Gresham Lorimer, Knight, draper, alderman for Cheap Ward, and member of the Worshipful Company of Merchant Tailors, entered upon his duties as chief magistrate of the first city in the world. Most auspiciously did his mayoralty commence. Called by the popular voice to the civic chair, his election had been almost unanimous, there being only one vote for the brother alder man nominated with him by the livery; and when the choice of the court was made known by the Recorder, the announcement was received with great cheering. The applause was even more vehement when, being called forth, the Lord Mayor elect was invested with the chain, and returned thanks for the great honor done him. Subsequently, on his being presented to the Lord Chancellor by the Recorder, the approbation of the Crown was very graciously communicated to him by his lordship. The farewell dinner jointly given by Sir Gresham and Sir Matthew Blakiston, the retiring Lord Mayor, was remarkable, even in the city, for splendor and profusion, and held out promise of many a glorious banquet hereafter. Special circumstances conspired to lend additional lustre to our Lord Mayor's Day. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Historical Romances of William Harrison Ainsworth, Vol. 14 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Historical Romances of William Harrison Ainsworth, Vol. 14 How Jane Milverton, The Mercer's Daughter of Cheapside, was Accounted The Fairest Damsel In London When Edward the Fourth was king, there were many fair damsels in the city of London, but none to compare with Jane, only daughter of John Milverton, erstwhile a mercer in Cheapside. Jane Milverton was in her seventeenth spring when her remarkable beauty first began to attract the attention of the young bachelors of the city; and whenever she walked forth with her mother, she was beset by a host of admirers, who vied with each other in endeavors to win a smile from her. Their efforts were vain. Brought up by a very careful mother, and being naturally modest and discreet, Jane took little notice of them. However, the report of her beauty spread far and wide, and caused so much talk, that people came from all parts of the city to look at her. Opinions differed, and faults were found of course, chiefly by her own sex, who were unwilling to admit that she was as lovely as represented; but none could deny that her figure was exquisite, and that her features had a most charming expression. To be more precise, we may say that her figure was slight and graceful; her tresses of a pale yellow; her features delicately and beautifully moulded; her complexion excessively fair, and her eyes of the softest blue. Historical Romances of William Harrison Ainsworth, Vol. 16 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Historical Romances of William Harrison Ainsworth, Vol. 16 We must endeavor to give her portrait, though only Lely could do justice to her charms. Dorinda Neville, then, was a blonde, with a delicately fair complexion, eyes of a tender blue, arched over by exquisitely pencilled eyebrows, and shaded by long eyelashes, lovely features, marked by a charming expression, a profusion of light tresses, and a slender but faultless figure. All her movements were full of grace, and she danced to admiration. Lady Muskerry told the king, confidentially, that she had been her niece's sole instructress in dancing, and had taken a vast deal of pains with her. The Novels of William Harrison Ainsworth (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Novels of William Harrison Ainsworth Anne's great bounty to the duchess and constant concession to her Opinions, made the latter suppose she had only to ask and have only to bear down in argument to convince, or, at least, gain her point. And for awhile she was successful. The queen's good nature yielded to her demands, while her timidity shrank before her threats. But these submissions were purchased by the duchess at the price of her royal mistress's regard and more than one quarrel having occurred between them, it became evident to all, except the favourite herself, that her sway was on the decline. Blinded, however, by confidence in the mastery she had obtained over the queen, she conceived her position to be as firm as that of the sovereign herself, and de hed her enemies to displace her. The Novels of William Harrison Ainsworth, Vol. 14 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Novels of William Harrison Ainsworth, Vol. 14 Nearly nine years after the events last recorded, and about the middle of May 1724, a young man of remarkably prepossessing appearance took his way, one afternoon, along Wych Street; and from the curiosity with which he regarded the houses on the left of the road, seemed to be in search of some particular habitation. The age of this individual could not be more than twenty-one; his figure was tall, robust, and gracefully proportioned; and his clear grey eye and open countenance bespoke a frank, generous, and resolute nature.
