WITCHINGHAM (GREAT) is a parish comprising 2, l53a. 3r.7p. of land, 669 souls, I46 houses, mostly in the village of Lenwade, 3% miles S. of Reepham, and 10 miles N.W. of Norwich. The principalowners are Henry Kett Tompson, Esq., New College, Oxford; Eliz. Ebbetts, Mr. John Middleton, and H. '1'. Knights, Esq.; the former resides at the Hall, a large brick mansion in the Elizabethan style, with embattled towers on the north hank of the Wensum. John Norris, Esq., who died in 1777. founded the Norrissian professorship at Cambridge, and built the Old Hall, at Witchiugham. Peter Le Neve, who died in 1724, had a. large estate here, and was the first president of the Antiquarian Society. John Brettin, Bishop of Hereford, who died in 1275, was born here; and Sir Wm. Wychingham, Judge of the Common Pleas in 1363, was buried in the south aisle of Witchingham Church, which he had built. The church dedicated to St. Mary, stands on elevated ground, about a mile N. of Lenwade Bridge, and is a handsome edifice, with a square tower, and two bells. The vicarage valued in the King's books at 5, is consolidated with the rectory of Little Witchingham, and enjoyed by the Rev. Wm. Howard, who has rebuilt the parsonage house.
