History of Charlemont Fort and Borough in the County of Armagh

Fort Charlemont was built as a crude garrison on the Blackwater by Charles Bount, Lord Mountjoy in 1600. Captain Sir Toby Caulfield was placed in charge of 150 men, and greatly improved the fort. In 1622 he received a grant of the fort and the surrounding area. He was created first Baron of Charlemont. Charlemont became a market town and a borough in the parish of Loughgall, county Armagh. The fort and the Caulfeild family played important roles in the history of the area. Mountjoy is a village in the parish of Cappagh, county Tyrone.
