Excerpt from History of Paterson and Its Environs (the Silk City), Vol. 2: Historical, Genealogical, Biographical In 1831 the appropriation for education was $300, and it remained at that figure for 1832, a similar sum being received from the State. In 1835 the Legislature enacted a law providing for the election of school trustees and allowing these a share of the money appropriated by the State for school purposes. In 1836 the appropriation for the support of the public schools of Paterson was only $200; in 1844 it had risen to $400.
