The various issues of the paper money of the American colonies, and of the Continental Congress, ex tending over a period of nearly a century, had become an attraction to many persons who had entered into the pur suit of collecting them. Naturally they sought, but mostly in vain, for the information which was to explain the origin and history of the notes, and to guide them in their investigations. Some works bearing upon the sub ject were known to be in existence, but were not generally available, while the growing desire of a closer knowledge of their contents, caused continual inquiry and search to be made for them.
