The United States

Book Description

Excerpt from The United States: Its History and Constitution The contents of the present volume, by the late Pro fessor Alexander Johnston, first appeared as the article of the Encyclopaedia Britannica on the history and Con stitution of the United States. The narrative, it should be borne in mind, ends with the year 1887 -the last of the period entitled by the author The Reconstructed Nation: 1865 There are, however, few details which the events of the past two years have modified, and few which need to be supplemented. Some slight verbal changes, where evidently indicated, have been made in this sense, a note added with reference to the admission into the Union of Washington, Montana, and North and South Dakota, and the election of Harrison and Morton, and the prohibition of Chinese immigration chronicled. It has not been thought advisable, however, to change or supplement the text in two or three other instances in which statistics of 1889 might have been given, but in which the reader will perceive those of 1887 to have been retained as better preserving the con. The Union, the Constitution, and Slavery (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Union, the Constitution, and Slavery The struggle in which this nation is engaged has already reached that stage in its progress when words of counsel may be offered, when principles may be discussed, when, if any man can throw light upon the questions at issue, or say or do aught to assuage the bitterness of feeling, and become the in strument of Peace, he is bound not to keep silent. For almost three years, the fierce passions, the mighty energies, the vast resources of the entire country, North and South, have been called into full play at what terrible cost, it is too soon yet to estimate. We do not suppose that the War 1s yet at an end; but we do believe that Reason is beginning to resume her throne. Men are beginning to ask, when is this awful sac rifice of the young best life of the country to cease What are the ends, for which the War is to be protracted P What are the difficulties, in the way of securing those ends In re Sponding to these inquiries, in the present Article, we shall write with entire frankness and while we utter only our own individual convictions, we shall do it in complete independence of all political parties, and, as far as may be, of all sectional prejudices. The Story of Our Constitution (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Story of Our Constitution IT is a thrilling story, the tale Of four million people deliberately choosing a form Of government for themselves and promising to live in Obedience to its laws. It is a story Of dreaming Of union, but dreading to be bound; Of dreaming Of separation, but fearing to be free; a story of peering into the future like the seers Of Old, and Of balancing sordid advantages and disadvantages like the most penurious Of misers. And what Of that noble group of men, unconsciously great, who without a thought Of their Own gain moved quietly about the task of saving a nation from lawlessness and anarchy? Why is it that histories which are elsewhere interesting become SO Often dry and dull when the Wonder-story is touched upon? The Story of the Constitution of the United States (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Story of the Constitution of the United States The story of the Constitution is of truth stranger than fie tion. It is natural to attribute to an institution throughout its history that reputation which it bears in our own day. Many men are yet living who remember with startling dis tinctness a time when the Constitution seemed merely a piece of parchment; when the fate of the nation was as uncertain as the course of battle; when stern necessity compelled so liberal an interpretation of the supreme law of the land that states men refrained from forming conclusions on the tendency Of national administration, and, looking hopefully forward, sought new meanings in events where before they had sought interpretation by a construction Of words. Then, and not till then, in our history was the Constitution of the United States understood in its spirit as being the expression of the nation's mind, Whatever that mind might be. But no man now living can remember the angry days when the Constitu tion was yet a hope or a proposition debated between jealous States and still more jealous political leaders. NO one can re member the living opinions which, at the close of the eight eenth century, so nearly triumphed, and whose triumph would have dissolved a feeble union of States and encouraged the horrors of an anarchy only possible in a democracy. When the Opinions on national government in America to-day and opinions Of a century ago are contrasted, it is difficult to be lieve that we are the children of our fathers. Seven Decades of the Union

Book Description

Excerpt from Seven Decades of the Union: The Humanities and Materialism To the rector, board of visitors, faculty, alumni, and students of the College of William and Mary, I dedicate this memoir of her late rector and chancellor, John Tyler, the tenth President of the United States of America; prepared for the ax chives of his Alma Mater, in obedience to her resolves and orders, at intervals snatched from professional business, and from household hindrances and cares, since the meeting of the rector, board, and faculty in the year 1868. It has been to me a task of tears, dashed with some sacred joy, - a tale of sadness cheered and lightened by some exultant songs of triumphant reminiscence. Mr. Tyler's life ran through seven decades, from 1790 to 1862; it is full of the themes of many and mighty events and thoughts; it has a divine moral in its teachings, and lessons for the deepest study of mankind. Humbled by attempting the performance of this task, I profess only a "joy of grief," - no talents for the volume of its labors. To bring that volume within readable compass, I have sketched a memoir, not altogether a biography, and not at all a history, - an outline not wholly filled up, - a drawing somewhat colored and shaded, but foreshortened to delineate salient points and parts in the important and impressive life and action of a good and great man.
