Movies are unquestionably one of the cutting-edge media in 20th-century artistic production, a discipline that has contributed more than any other to fashioning the visual culture of our contemporaries and of the artists of our day and age. The Center Pompidou continues its policy of publicizing trail-blazing references to cinematographic culture by presenting the exhibition Hitchcock and Art which first went on show in the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and whose Paris debut is marked by an adaptation and some significant additions, primarily by the arrival of works from the collections held in the Musee' National d'Art Moderne. Keeping faith with the Centre's multidisciplinary vocation of exploring and valorizing relationships between the different fields of modern and contemporary artistic creation, the exhibition aims at establishing a dialogue and revealing correlations between a leading, complex and universally known opus of cinematography work on the one hand and artistic movements on the other, from Romanticism to Surrealism, as well as architecture or graphic design, which left such a profound mark as they nourished Alfred Hitchcock's imagery and aesthetic. In a now-famous interview with Fran�ois Truffaut in 1962, Alfred Hitchcock described his masterpiece Rear Window (1954) as "the purest expression of a cinematic idea." But what, precisely, did Hitchcock mean by pure cinema? Was pure cinema a function of mise en sc�ne, or composition within the frame? Was it a function of montage, "of pieces of film assembled"? This notion of pure cinema has intrigued and perplexed critics, theorists, and filmmakers alike in the decades following this discussion. And even across his 40-year career, Hitchcock's own ideas about pure cinema remained mired in a lack of detail, clarity, and analytical precision. The Art of Pure Cinema is the first book-length study to examine the historical foundations and stylistic mechanics of pure cinema. Emily Hitchcock Terry (1838-1921) was the scientifically and aesthetically gifted daughter of a highly intellectual and artistic Massachusetts family. An early graduate of Mount Holyoke College, she began her formal study of art at The Cooper Union in New York City in 1865, where her training in drawing and watercolor painting was influenced by the Pre-Raphaelite movement. In 1872 Terry moved to Minnesota, where she was an avid plant collector and painted the flora she saw. Rather than creating a conventional herbarium of pressed specimens, she created instead a "painted herbarium". Terry's passion for botany - "As long as I live I shall work in botany, if I have any eyes to see" - was communicated to others through her artistic talent. Her collection of over 140 paintings, which scientifically document the flora of several areas of America, has remained almost totally unrecognized for more than one hundred years. Her watercolor images of the Minnesota flora, painted from nature, are the earliest known botanical illustrations in the state. Emily Hitchcock Terry's contribution to Minnesota's botanical history is unique. Her story, however, stands alongside those of countless women throughout history whose contributions have yet to be recognized. The beautiful reproductions of her work in this volume give us our first view of Terry's painted herbarium.
