Urban Water III is the proceedings of the 3rd International Conference on the Design, Construction, Maintenance, Monitoring and Control of Urban Water Systems. The conference reconvened following its success in 2012 and in 2014, when it was held in the Algarve, Portugal. These proceedings deal with two main subjects: water supply systems and urban drainage. Nature provides us with many services seemingly for free: recharged groundwater, fertile soil and plant biomass created by photosynthesis. We human beings draw extensive benefits from these “ecosystem services,” or ES – food, water supply, recreation and protection from natural hazards. Major international studies, such as the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, have addressed the enormous role of biodiversity and ecosystems to human well-being, and they draw particular attention to the consequences resulting from the reduction or loss of these services. This book highlights the importance of the cultural sphere, and in particular literature, in response and discussion with the unprecedented phenomenon known as climate change. Antonia Mehnert turns to a set of contemporary American works of fiction, reading them as a unique response to the challenges of representing climate change. She draws on “climate change fiction”— texts dealing explicitly with anthropogenic climate change—and explores how these works convey climate change, deal with its challenging characteristics, and with what narrative techniques they ultimately participate in its communication. Indeed, a number of challenging traits make climate change a difficult issue to engage with including its slow and long temporal dimension, global scale, scientific controversy, and its disconnect between cause and effect. Forschungsfeld des SFB 461 waren Starkbeben mit einem regionalen Fokus auf den Vrancea-Ereignissen in Rumänien, wo sie immer wieder starke Schäden verursachten. Diese Risiken und die Gewissheit, dass Rumänien und seine Städte wieder von einem Starkbeben betroffen werden, bildeten die Motivation der Arbeit, erkennend, dass Schadensminderung mit moderner Wissenschaft und Technik sowie mit konsequenter Implementierung des Wissens möglich und aussichtsreich ist.

He therefore empirically analyzes collaborative work in inter-organizational crisis – such as the police, fire departments, energy network operators and citizens – in order to identify collaboration practices that reveal work infrastructure limitations. He also designs, implements and evaluates novel concepts and ICT artifacts towards the support of emergent collaboration.
