For more than forty years, pastor R. Kent Hughes has shared the gospel with thousands of people and raised the standard of expository preaching in North America and beyond. To celebrate his legacy and pay tribute to his years of ministry, fifteen of Hughes's friends and colleagues from across the globe, including J.I. Packer, Wayne Grudem, John MacArthur, Peter Jensen, and D.A. Carson, examine what it means to be an expository preacher. Among the contributors are professors, a university chaplain, a college president, and urban church planters-living testimonies to Hughes's wide influence ...

Charles Simeon ministered for over fifty years in one parish at the heart of Cambridge during the bleak period of English national life between the French Wars and the passing of the Reform Bill. He was considered by Lord Macaulay to have had greater influence on the life of the church than any primate. Soundly converted in his first term at King's College, he was appointed Vicar of Holy Trinity in 1782, combining the incumbency with a Fellowship and various academic posts. Highly unpopular at first on account of both his message and his manner, scorned and abused for many years, he carried on regardless of other's opinions until in the end he became perhaps the best known and best respected name in Cambridge. Hot-tempered but warm-hearted, impetuous but infinitely patient, a man of imposing, even remarkable appearance, he was a "character," about whom the most entertaining stories are eagerly recounted. As a Christian of independent mind and strong convictions, he found his spiritual strength in a lifetime of deep devotion and strict personal discipline; as a biblical preacher he was the first for many generations to see the possibility and importance of teaching others how to expound the Scriptures; as a pastor and evangelist his work with both town and gown was marked by a rare faithfulness and zeal. Limited all his life to the one center of spiritual activity, he yet was the moving spirit in the formation of the Church Missionary Society, and an enthusiastic supporter of the Bible Society and of work among the Jews.

Locked church doors and tossed rotten eggs greeted the faithful and patient Charles Simeon in his early years as a pastor. But in humility and simple power he was allowed by God to triumph. He became, as John R.W. Stott notes, "one of the greatest and most persuasive preachers the Church of England has ever known." Why did he have such an impact? You'll discover the reasons yourself as you read these clearflowing sermons, rich in content and clean in style. Shining through his words are Simeon's simple devotion to pure biblical truth, his concise and orderly presentation, and his pastor's mind and heart. James Houston's editorial preface is an instructive guide to Simeon's sound homiletical principles, while Stott's introduction is an engaging portrait of Simeon as a servant of God. Surveying his long life (1758-1836) and fruitful ministry, Stott is especially impressed by Simeon's refreshing, unaffected humility, and writes, "Our proud, self-confident, self-congratulatory generation urgently needs to recover this biblical perspective." Dr. James M. Houston, editor of the CLASSICS OF FAITH AND DEVOTION SERIES, is a highly acclaimed scholar and pioneer in the field of evangelical spirituality. He came to North America from England in 1968 to lead Regent College in Vancouver, Canada, an international graduate school of Christian studies.
