Light on Life brings the insight and wisdom of Indian astrology to the Western reader. Jyotish, or Indian astrology, is an ancient and complex method of exploring the nature of time and space and its effect upon the individual. Formerly a closed book to the West, the subject has now been clarified and explained by Hart de Fouw and Dr. Robert Svoboda, two experts and long-term practitioners. In Light on Life they have created a complete and thorough handbook that can be appreciated and understood by those with very little knowledge of astrology.

It is my profound privilege to present before the esteemed readers the English translation of the most inspiring and enlightening ancient classic Maansagari which was composed by Janardan Harji, the son of a head priest from Gujarat who was a devout scholar of Vedic Sastras and was known for his great virtues Maansagari is amongst a few ancient treatises which were composed in the primeval time. Although the exact origin of this text is not Known, some scholars trace it to the 16th century. This astrological text however, has assumed remarkable importance for its unique and special treatment accorded to the intricate and complex features of this pristine monograph. Most of its assertions and exposition were so original, fundamental and creative in character that the learned astrological seers defined this pearless Grantha as Maansagari Paddhiti. Varāhamihira also called Varaha or Mihir; was an Indian astronomer; mathematician; and astrologer who lived in Ujjain. He was born in Avanti (India) region; roughly corresponding to modern-day Malwa; to Adityadasa; who was himself an astronomer. Educated at Kapitthaka; he is considered to be one of the nine jewels (Navaratnas) of the court of legendary ruler Yashodharman Vikramaditya of Malwa. Varahamihira's main work is the book Pañcasiddhāntikā dated ca. 575 CE gives us information about older Indian texts which are now lost. Another important contribution of Varahamihira is the encyclopedic Brihat-Samhita. It covers wide ranging subjects of human interest; including astrology; planetary movements; eclipses; rainfall; clouds; architecture; growth of crops; manufacture of perfume; matrimony; domestic relations; gems; pearls; and rituals. The volume expounds on gemstone evaluation criterion found in the Garuda Purana; and elaborates on the sacred Nine Pearls from the same text. It contains 106 chapters and is known as the "great compilation". Among Varahamihira's contribution to physics is his statement that reflection is caused by the back-scattering of particles and refraction (the change of direction of a light ray as it moves from one medium into another) by the ability of the particles to penetrate inner spaces of the material; much like fluids that move through porous objects. He was also an astrologer. He wrote on all the three main branches of Jyotisha astrology and His son Prithuyasas also contributed to Hindu astrology; his book Hora Sara is a famous book on horoscopy.

Maansagari Paddhiti as the textual nomenclature suggests is the unique system of delineating horoscopes. It is a complete text explaining the use of many Yogas, different Dasa systems, transits as such and various Chakras. There is no other text that deals with all these lesser known tools of astrological prognostication namely Vargas, Dasas and Chakras. In this translation, all possible cross-references are cited to present the views of other writers as well as an explanation of the principles through examples and horoscopes that have been presented, for use by the students and scholars.
