The Indian growth story has been one of high Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth but primarily driven by the growth in services sector. Growth may be higher in the last two decades but inclusive growth or equitable development has been missing. Inclusive growth thus seeks to broaden the flow of benefits of globalization towards the currently excluded sections. Economic growth in Karnataka primarily driven by services (55.17%). The Contribution of the industrial sector is smaller which contributes only 16.22 percent to overall growth compared to 30.20 percent at the All-India level. Economic growth particularly pro-poor growth in terms of concentrating on agriculture and employment are important in order to reduce poverty. However, economic growth alone will not be sufficient to lift some people above poverty. Despite achieving the MDG on poverty, a large number of SC, STs will remain poor even if the growth rate is hiked. Karnataka economic growth may be improving but Karnataka is lagging behind southern states like Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Karnataka is need to operationalize a plan to accelerate growth in agriculture, employment, and social sector development and in reducing regional disparities for achieving inclusive growth during the 12th Five Year Plan period and beyond in Karnataka. The action plan should cover the priority areas like agriculture, employment and social sectors. It should have a plan for removing economic and social deprivation across all regions.

Among the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGS), SDG 1 envisages end of poverty in all its forms everywhere and SDG 2 envisages zero hunger and achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture. In order to achieve the SDGs 1 and 2, Govt. of India has launched different agricultural and horticultural scheme to protect the loss of farmers. These schemes are implemented in the states of India with the initiatives of the state governments. The book is highlighted on the socio-economic impact study with concurrent evaluation on Agriculture/Horticulture based Schemes implemented in the state Tripura. Sustainable Horticulture Development and Nutrition Security (Vol. 3)

We all are indebted to nature for providing us food and its resources for our subsistence and survival. In the food domain, cereal and legume grains occupy the front line, whereas, horticultural crops have occupied the second line of defense. For healthy diet cereals and legumes provide us with carbohydrates and protein, whereas, fruits and vegetables provide us minerals and vitamins. Both macro- and micro- nutrients are essential for human growth and development. The fruits and vegetables are the major source of micro-nutrients. It is estimated that up to 2.7 million lives could potentially be saved each year if fruit and vegetable production was sufficiently increased. Both at national and international levels, food and agriculture/horticulture development plans and estimates are basically developed, framed and implemented, and narrowed down to cereal production. In the present context of attaining nutrition security, this mode of thinking on ‘food’ needs to be changed to ‘nutrients’, which will include necessarily all those crops including fruit and vegetables which provide all macro- and micro-nutrients to ensure balanced nutrition needed for good human health. The present publication has attempted to reflect and discuss the above views and ideas on the subject of sustainable horticulture development and nutrition security in nine chapters with 32 articles by 32 authors.
