Hostile Shores Online

Book Description

"Every age has it heroes, villains, tales, and triumphs. But it is not the event that echoes through the waves of time, nor even the players. What will matter in the end is the perspective and the message. What the viewer is able to gain, learn, uncover, and more so the angle. For history is a repetition, lives repeatable, and energy recycled. While the constant seems to be a repartition of change, there is something deeper. We, they, it, all of a cycle, a cycle cylindrical and evolving. One wave after another as part of the cycle, a constant viewable if far enough away. Each and every piece necessary, every thought important, every one significant, and all a matter of your perspective." We began in Heven so too will return We have chosen our full statistics Whether we remember or not it is our fault Holding his wrapped still bleeding hand, he could not help but feel proud, invigorated even. He may have left a piece of himself on the battlefield, but he took more than his share in experience, knowledge, and confidence. With a half smirk of conviction he let loose his arms, a display of his mind over matter. Wherein lies the trauma of our waking dreamings Fierce smoke colored whirlwinds on a mind Withdrawn but ever wandering he must rise Nightmarish tremors of futures unknown Will be or could be is lost to uncertainty

Guns and Utu

Book Description

'So they went forth, and they were given over to death by the guns.' -Rangipito, of Ngati Rahiri In the two decades before the Treaty of Waitangi, New Zealand was ripped asunder by island-spanning waves of warfare, extreme violence and cannibalism. Great war parties surged the length of the land to avenge historic grievances, killing and burning as they went. Whole peoples were uprooted and found new homes. Despite the name given them by history, one thing we can be certain about is that these dramatic conflicts were not simply 'musket' wars. This was an age of courage, of heroism, of great character and of astonishing deeds. And they are not dead history. Twenty-first-century New Zealand has been profoundly shaped by them, not least in the location of most of the major cities. In Guns and Utu, historian Matthew Wright disputes the many mythologies of these wars, examining some of the whys and wherefores of this generation-long culture collision. 'A spectacular book.' -Don Rood, Radio New Zealand National
