She rubbed her forehead and decided it would be best to just tell the truth. The whole story of her night out, the drinking and what she’d found when she woke up that morning came tumbling out in a rush. It felt humiliating to make the confession, but there was no way around it. The quiet that ensued when she finished felt excruciating until it was finally broken. “You really are certain you’re not pregnant?” Dr. Andrew asked. “I’m not,” Brianna whined and lifted her t-shirt to show her honed, flat belly. “I haven’t even had sex for, well..., not for a while.” It was another intimate admission that made her blush and she couldn’t bring herself to look at the doctor when he stepped in front of her. “Then I might know what your problem is,” he said. I’ve heard of a number of stories in the last six months or so where it was used nefariously by slipping it in a drink. Could anyone have done that with you last night?” “But I came home alone,” she said. “It’s not like I was with anyone who could, well..., you know.” “It’s just an educated guess,” Dr. Andrew said. “I’ll need to examine you to be sure, so if you could take off your top for me, please.” Brianna watched as he removed his coat to put it down on the coffee table beside his medical bag. There was no keeping the grimace from her face, but there was little choice other than to do what he’d asked. She was aware of him looming over her as she grabbed her t-shirt to pull it over her head… “What do you think?” she blurted out. “That is milk, so you are definitely lactating,” he replied. “I can only assume you have been targeted with Lactiserv. It’s the most obvious explanation.” “So, what do I do?” Brianna whined. “Is there a cure?” “Well, Lactiserv typically acts as a one-and-done remedy,” Dr. Andrew said. “That is, you take it to feed your child and the symptoms wane afterwards.” “So…,” Brianna let out. “You need to get the milk out.” Dr. Andrew explained. “That’s the cure.” “How?” Brianna asked. “Typically a manual or electric pump would be used for that, but...” The unfinished comment hung between them as Dr. Andrew reached out again.
