Structure: the foundation for health and function What sets apart the average dog enthusiast from the expert? Often it’s an in-depth knowledge of the anatomy of the dog and a solid understanding of terminology used in the world of dogs. Do you know what a judge is talking about when he mentions “stifle let-down,” “shallow brisket,” or “excessive angulation?” K-9 Structure and Terminology defines and illustrates these and hundreds of other terms in easy to understand language so you can train your mind and eye to evaluate dogs. All dogs need sound structure for health, show, work, or sport, and, by learning to see beneath the skin the reader will be more able to work with, understand, and appreciate canis familiaris. Gain a better understanding of: • Breed Standards including breed variations. • How the original purpose of the breed is expressed in the structure of the dog. • Terminology used in veterinary care and dog sports, especially Conformation. • How to identify what is right and sound in any dog you encounter. Bonus! A 31-page glossary of words including common and less common terms. What experts are saying about K-9 Structure and Terminology: "If you wish to significantly improve your knowledge of canine conformation, K-9 Structure and Terminology provides a…comprehensive description of the details…of canine variation. Edwards, Ph.D., Professor of Biology, Emeritus, Salem College; AKC, Director, Judging Research and Development "All of us in the dog world should strive for perfection…We need to train our eyes and our hands to recognize the strengths in a dog’s structure and movement. Once described by Joanna Lumley as "the man with no fear", Tristan Voorspuy spent his life living up to the legend. From his epic Cairo to Cape Town motorbike ride, to extraordinary wildlife encounters and many death-defying light aircraft near misses, Life on the Edge tells the extraordinary story of an adventurer and horseman determined to live life to the full. This was a life defined by a love of Africa, often shared with appreciative clients on Offbeat riding safaris, famous for lifechanging adventures and innumerable close shaves with dangerous big game. But Life on the Edge is also the story of compassion, conservation and, ultimately, tragedy. In the last two decades of his life, Voorspuy helped transform the overgrazed and drought-blighted Sosian Ranch in Northern Kenya into a celebrated game reserve, acclaimed tourist destination and successful cattle ranch. True to form, it was while defending this property that an unarmed Tristan was gunned down and killed, a murder that sent shockwaves around the world.

August 1781 saw the publication of a manual on fox hunting that would become a classic of its genre. Hugely popular in its own day, Peter Beckford's Thoughts on Hunting is often cited as marking the birth of modern hunting and continues to be quoted from affectionately today by the hunting fraternity. Less stressed is the fact that its subject was immediately controversial, and that a hostile review which appeared on the heels of the manual's publication raised two criticisms of fox hunting that would be repeated over the next two centuries: fox hunting was a cruel sport and a feudal, anachronistic one at that. This study explores the attacks made on fox hunting from 1781 to the legal ban achieved in 2004, as well as assessing the reasons for its continued appeal and post-ban survival. Chapters cover debates in the areas of: class and hunting; concerns over cruelty and animal welfare; party politics; the hunt in literature; and nostalgia. By adopting a thematic approach, the author is able to draw out the wider social and cultural implications of the debates, and to explore what they tell us about national identity, social mores and social relations in modern Britain.
