The Song Companion to the Scriptures (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Song Companion to the Scriptures To meet that need the song companion TO the scriptures is issued. While it does not seek to enter into competition with the denominational Hymnals and Hymn-books, it has been so arranged as to make it in every way suitable for the regular services of Christian worship. There are many Christian congregations gathering together for worship, unaffiliated with any of the great Denominations, especially in Mission work, whose needs are not perfectly met by a Hymn-book which is purely evangelistic, and who would object to use any Hymnal which bears a denominational stamp. Such, we believe, will find in this collection one admirably adapted to their requirements. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Psalms, Hymns, and Passages of Scripture Forchristian Worship

Book Description

Excerpt from Psalms, Hymns, and Passages of Scripture Forchristian Worship: Appendix Lyra Germanica to Messrs. J. Masters and Co. For like permission in respect to the Hymn, No. 203. The aim of the Compiler has been quality rather than quantity. Some Hymns have been inserted at the particular request of Ministers who use the Book; whilst some others which were asked for (mainly on account of the tunes to which they had been set) have been omitted as unsuitable. It has been found impossible to adopt the continuous numbering in consequence of the existence of a small supplement of Hymns on Adult Baptism, bound up with the Hymn Book for use in Baptist Churches. The Congregational Psalmist

Book Description

Excerpt from The Congregational Psalmist: A Companion to All the New Hymn-Books; Providing Tunes, Chorales, and Chants, for the Metrical Hymns and Passages of Scripture Contained in Those Books; First Section, Tunes and Chorales The revolt of hymn writers from the cramped and meagre Iambic forms, to which in England we have chiefly been restricted, is in every way a great gain to Church Song. Trochaic and other metres give variety and richness to hymns, which not only gratify the taste, and fill the imagination, but like all forms of beauty directly minister to feeling. Just now, perhaps, this diversity is in danger of becoming excessive and eccentric; but it is only a passing phase, a not unnatural reaction from stiff traditional forms. Nothing that is merely odd endures. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Congregational Psalmist, a Companion to All the New Hymn-Books

Book Description

Excerpt from The Congregational Psalmist, a Companion to All the New Hymn-Books: Providing Tunes, Chants, and Chorales, for the Metrical Hymns and Passages of Scripture Contained in Those Books In preparing this work, therefore, the utmost care has been exercised in selecting such melodies, and in clothing them with such harmonies, as will enable the whole congregation easily and heartily to offer to God its eucharistic service of song. The Psalmody of almost every age and land has been laid under contribution, and congregations who use the book will join in strains which have strengthened the hearts and sanctified the worship of saints, and martyrs, and reformers, and, indeed, of the Holy Church throughout all the world. Especially has recourse been had to the grand chorals of the Reform tion, the finest melodies of which are inserted in this work, many of them, especially of Luther's, for the first time presented in forms available for English worshippers. Some of the finest Hymns that we possess have hitherto occupied a silent place in our Hymn Books on account of their peculiar metres. For these, tunes of a thoroughly congregational character have been carefully selected; and, judging from the experience afforded by the publication of the first two parts of this work, they will soon become the most popular hymns in our congregational Worship.
