Direct Interface and One-Channel Translation

Book Description

Following up on the Guide to Morphosyntax-Phonology Interface Theories (2011), written from a theory-neutral point of view, this book lays out the author’s approach to the representational side of the interface. The book is thus about how information is transmitted to phonology when an object is inserted into phonological representations (as opposed to the derivational means, i.e. phase theory today). The idea of Direct Interface is that diacritics such as hash-marks in SPE or prosodic constituency since the early 80s, which mediate between morpho-syntax and phonology, are illegal in a modular environment where computational systems can only process domain-specific vocabulary. Direct Interface instead holds that only truly phonological vocabulary can carry morpho-syntactic information. It is shown that of all representational objects only syllabic space qualifies. Couched in CVCV (or strict CV), i.e. Government Phonology, this insight is then applied in detailed case studies of Belarusian, Corsican, Greek and the exhaustive lexical inventory of sonorant-obstruent-initial words in 13 Slavic languages,. In this sense, the book is the 2nd volume of A Lateral Theory of Phonology (2004).

Belarus Knockin’ at the Vatican’s Doors

Book Description

Since 2020, Belarusian civil society, as well as political prisoners and their families, have repeatedly appealed to the Holy See and Pope Francis in the hope that the Vatican will be able to help stop the repression in Belarus and release political prisoners. The Christian Vision group follows these efforts and often facilitated them. The Christian Vision group of lay people and clergy of all major Christian denominations in Belarus working for stopping politically-motivated persecutions and violence and for democratic changes in Belarus, has published the book Belarus Knockin’ at the Vatican’s Doors: Appeals of the Belarusian Civil Society in the Context of the Political Crisis 2020 documenting the appeals of the Belarusian civil society for support to the Apostolic See. It opens with Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s response to Pope Francis’s encyclical Fratelli tutti, in which the leader of democratic Belarus reflected on the ways to resolve conflict in society in conditions where one side has all the means of violence and willingly uses them to usurp power. The theme is continued in the text of Rev. Viachaslau Barok, a popular video blogger and preacher, Pope Francis, how to stop the war in Belarus? How to stop evil? The book contains letters to Pope Francis of the political prisoner Ihar Losik, the wife of the political prisoner Pavel Sieviarynec, and the group of spouses and relatives of political prisoners, Vyzvalenne. All those appeals were accompanied by cover letters from the Christian Vision group; they are being published for the first time. Also, a Christian Vision’s letter to the Secretary of State of the Apostolic See, Cardinal Pietro Paralin, is published for the first time. An analytical article by the coordinator of Christian Vision, Natallia Vasilevich, The Vatican’s Reactions to the Belarusian Crisis, concludes the publication.

Belarus in Crisis

Book Description

In 2020, mass anti-government protests erupted across Belarus. The brutal crackdown that followed shocked the international community: the authorities arrested tens of thousands of citizens, shut down independent media and NGOs, and fomented a migrant crisis on the European Union’s border. But where many thought Belarus’s dictator, Alyaksandr Lukashenka, would fall, he instead turned to Moscow for support, intensifying repression. Many of his opponents fled the country. Then, in February 2022, Belarus provided a staging area for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, allowing troops and missile systems to be based on its territory as large-scale war returned to Eastern Europe once again. Many outsiders now view Belarus as little more than a Russian military district, rather than a sovereign country. Paul Hansbury offers a wide-ranging account of these two related crises. Exploring the domestic origins of Belarus’s political chaos and its international ramifications, he also assesses the effectiveness of western sanctions policy, as well as considering the history and prospects of Belarusian statehood. Does Belarus have a future as an independent polity? And how has Russia’s war with Ukraine affected Belarusians’ views of their dictatorship and the cause of democracy in their country?
