Mindanao: The Long Journey To Peace And Prosperity

Book Description

Across more than four decades, the conflict between the national government and Muslim liberation forces in the southern Philippines has killed tens of thousands and displaced millions. Two landmark agreements under the presidency of Benigno S Aquino III — the first in 2012 and the second in 2014 — raised high hopes that peace might finally be on the way. But the peace process stalled, and has yet to regain momentum, after a botched counterterrorism operation in early 2015.This volume provides both in-depth examination of the latest stage of a still-ongoing peace process as well as richly textured analysis of the historical, political, and economic context underlying one of the most enduring conflicts in the world. It is thus an extremely important foundational resource in the continuing quest for peace and prosperity in Mindanao.

The International People’s Tribunal for 1965 and the Indonesian Genocide

Book Description

The International People’s Tribunal addressed the many forms of violence during the period of the massacres of 1965–1966 in Indonesia. It was held in The Hague, The Netherlands, in November 2015, to commemorate fifty years since the killings began. The Tribunal, as a people’s court, holds no jurisdiction and was an attempt to achieve symbolic justice for the crimes of 1965. This book offers new and previously unpublished insights into the types of crimes committed in the 1965 genocide and how these crimes were prosecuted at the International People’s Tribunal for 1965. Divided thematically, each chapter analyses a different crime – enslavement, sexual violence, torture – perpetrated during the Indonesian killings. The contributions consider either general patterns across Indonesia or a particular region of the archipelago. The book reflects on how crimes were charged at the International People’s Tribunal for 1965 and focuses on questions relating to the place of people’s tribunals in truth-seeking and justice claims, and the prospective for transitional justice in contemporary Indonesia. Positioning the events in Indonesia in 1965 within the broader scope of comparative genocide studies, the book is an original and timely contribution to knowledge about the dynamics of the Indonesian killings. It will be of interest to academics in the field of Asian studies, in particular Southeast Asia, Genocide Studies, Criminology and Criminal Justice and Transitional Justice Studies.

Visayan-English Dictionary

Book Description

Published in 1934, this was the first Visayan-English dictionary. It contains more than 18,000 words of the Hiligynon and Hinirya dialects as spoken in and around Iloilo, besides many Spanish words, which, being frequently used by the Visayans, have become part of the Visayan language. Collated by the REV. J. KAUFMANN, M.H.M, parish priest of Igbars, Iloilo, Philippines. Today, this dictionary remains one of the best Visayan-English Dictionaries; and is useful to both English students of Visayan, and also Visayan native speakers who require a dictionary of their own language with definitions in English. This work contains not merely a definition of the meaning of each Visayan term, but also English equivalents in abundance. It has been thought better, in translating the Visayan sentences, not to depart too far from the literal meaning; nevertheless English words and phrases have been introduced, which will prove most useful to Visayan students of English.
