Book Description

The goal of this report is to consolidate in one single publication comprehensive and reliable information on aviation and the environment. In accessible language, readers will find up to date information on the work of ICAO and other relevant bodies. Intended primarily for ICAO Contracting States, the aviation community and interested members of the public, the Report focuses on the results of the seventh meeting of ICAO's Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection (CAEP/7), held in February 2007 and on the ICAO Aviation Emissions Colloquium (May 2007). It also pays particular attention to studies and reports from the IPCC and developments emanating from other relevant UN fora such as the UNFCCC in reference to aviation. The Report consists of six parts which, together, cover the full range of issues, developments and trends: Aviation Outlook; Aircraft Noise; Local Emissions; Global Emissions; Modelling and Databases; and International Cooperation. For ease of reading and consulting, each part begins with an overview to bring readers up to speed on the subject discussed, followed by articles from experts. Most of the material covered in this Report reflects the work of ICAO and its groups of experts, although some articles are dedicated to main developments outside ICAO of relevance to the discussions on aviation and the environment.

Regime Interaction and Climate Change

The regulation of greenhouse gas emissions from international aviation and maritime transport has proved to be a difficult task for international climate negotiations such as the Paris Agreement in 2015. Almost two decades prior, Article 2.2 of the Kyoto Protocol excluded emissions from international aviation and maritime transport from its targets, delegating the negotiation of sector-specific regulations to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the International Maritime Organization (IMO), respectively. However, progress at these venues has also been limited. Regime Interaction and Climate Change maps out the legal frameworks in the Climate, ICAO and IMO regimes, and explores the law-making process for the regulation of international aviation and maritime transport through the lenses of fragmentation of international law and regime interaction. The papers have been edited for brevity. Issues examined include biodiversity conservation, environmental impact assessments, energy, food security, sustainable business practices, public housing, environmental education, and climate change.The first compilation, Sustainability Matters: Environmental Management in Asia was published in 2010 (World Scientific) and comprised the best papers from 2001/2002 to 2006/2007. The second, Sustainability Matters: Challenges and Opportunities in Environmental Management in Asia was published in 2011 (Pearson), and comprised the best papers from 2007/2008 and 2008/2009. The third and fourth compilations (World Scientific) comprised the best papers from the period 2009/2010 to 2011/2012.The papers are edited by five staff members from different disciplines in the MEM programme: Lye Lin-Heng, Victor R Savage, Kua Harn-Wei, Chou Loke-Ming and Tan Puay-Yok.




Biokerosene

This book provides a detailed overview of aspects related to the overall provision chain for biokerosene as part of the global civil aviation business. Starting with a review of the current market situation for aviation fuels and airplanes and their demands, it then presents in-depth descriptions of classical and especially new types of non-edible biomass feedstock suitable for biokerosene provision. Subsequent chapters discuss those fuel provision processes that are already available and those still under development based on various biomass feedstock materials, and present e.g. an overview of the current state of the art in the production of a liquid biomass-based fuel fulfilling the specifications for kerosene.
