Joseph Freeman (1953- ) was born in Vanceboro, North Carolina into an African-American family. In 1972 he joined the United States military and was stationed in Hawaii. He met Toe Isapela Leituala, a Samoan girl. She introduced him to The Church of Jesus Chirst of Latter-day Saints. In 1973 he was baptized into the LDS Church and in 1974 they were married. After leaving the military in 1975, they settled in Salt Lake City where he became the first African-American man to be given the priesthood after the revelation received by President Spencer W. Kimball on 9 June 1978.
