In Memoriam (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from In Memoriam I have made no attempt to note all the slight verbal changes which the poet made in the successive editions of the poem. They are sixty-two in number, most of them insignificant, and have been many times collated. In this omission I feel that I am quite in accord with the wishes of the poet himself, of whom his son observes: He 'gave the people of his best, ' and he usually wished that his best should remain without variorum readings, 'the chips of the work-shop, ' as he called them. In only a few cases where the change is really significant, especially when the poet himself commented on it, have I departed from this rule and made a note of the change. To former editions of In Memoriam and to many critics on both sides of the Atlantic every new editor must necessarily be indebted. Especially great is the debt which every student of Tennyson, the world over, owes to the beautiful memoir of the poet by his son. It is a treasure house of interesting and valuable information, and one of the most satisfactory biographies ever written. My obliga tions to this and to' various other books and magazine articles are duly acknowledged in the notes. The preparation of this little volume has been a labor of love. Begun nearly ten years ago, and gone over year after year in connection with my classes in the literature of the nineteenth century, it has at last assumed a form which, it is hoped, may help a larger circle to appreciate one of the most beautiful as it is one of the most thoughtful and inspiring poems of modern times. A Book of Cambridge Verse (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. A Critical Study of in Memoriam (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from A Critical Study of in Memoriam The most satisfactory book on the whole, in the way of assisting the student to read In Memoriam intelligently, is probably the small volume of Mrs. Chapman. Her analysis of the separate poems is very generally just, and the contents are summarized, always in correct, and sometimes in felicitous and graceful terms. In Memoriam Sempiternam (Classic Reprint)

The Poetry of Catullus (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Poetry of Catullus The favourites of the gods are released from life before they have had time to outstay their youth. The tribute to those who died young is tribute to the youth which they never lived to lose - ih part, no doubt, objective, but in part also subjective, and prompted by the thought expressed in that line of Thackeray: Oh, the brave days, when we were twenty-one!
