Education is crucial for fostering individual growth, creating a more fair and equitable community, and advancing national progress. India's continuous rise and worldwide leadership in areas such as economic development, social fairness and equality, scientific progress, national integration, and cultural preservation hinge on the country's ability to ensure that all of its citizens have access to a high-quality education. Handbook of Education Systems in South Asia

Book Description

This handbook is an important reference work in understanding education systems in the South Asia region, their development trajectory, challenges and potential. The handbook includes the SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) countries for discussion---Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka---while also considering countries such as Myanmar and the Maldives that have considerable shared history in the region. Such a comparative perspective is largely absent within the literature given the present paucity of intra-regional interaction. South Asian education systems are viewed primarily through a development lens in terms of inequalities, challenges and responses. However, the development of modern institutions of education and the challenges that it faces requires cultural and historical understanding of indigenous traditions as well as indigenous modern thinkers and education movements. Therefore, this encompassing referenc e work covers indigenous education traditions, formal education systems, including school and preschool education, higher and professional education, education financing systems and structures, teacher education systems, addressing huge linguistic and other diversities, and marginalization within the formal education system, and pedagogy and curricula. All the countries in this region have their own unique geographical, cultural, economic and political character and histories of interest and significance, and have responded to common issues such as overcoming the colonial legacy, language diversity, or girls’ education, or minority rights in education, in uniquely different ways. The sections therefore include country-specific perspectives as far as possible to highlight these issues. Internationally renowned specialists of South Asian education systems have contributed to this important reference work, making it an invaluable resource for researchers and students of education interested in South Asia.

Teacher Quality and Education Policy in India

Book Description

By drawing on quantitative data and qualitative analyses of five major national education policies implemented in India over the last 15 years, this comprehensive volume explores their impact on teacher quality and perceived effectiveness, explaining how this relates to variations in student performance. Responding to a national agenda to increase the quality of the Indian teacher workforce, Teacher Quality and Education Policy in India critically questions the application of human capital theory to Indian education policy. Chapters provide in-depth and strategically structured analyses of five national policies – including the recently approved National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 – to see how Indian policymakers use teacher quality as a driver and measurement of education and national economic development. Ultimately, the text offers evidence-based policy recommendations to improve teacher quality in India, suggesting that while all five policies have contributed significant frameworks and recommendations for teacher quality reform, they have failed to move beyond a symbolic function. Given its rigorous methodological approach, this book will be a valuable addition to the under-researched question of education policymaking in postcolonial contexts. It will be an indispensable resource not only for scholars working on policymaking in the Indian context, but also for those working at the intersection of education, teacher development, and policymaking in developing countries.

Innovation In India’s Education System- An Overview Of NEP2020

Book Description

Education is indispensable for the advancement of national development and the realisation of human potential. We are all aware that the awareness landscape is undergoing rapid transformations, with a variety of remarkable technological and scientific advancements, such as the emergence of enormous amounts of data, appliance learning, as well as machines that will replace AI, resulting in the abolition of numerous unskilled jobs worldwide. At the same time, there will be an even greater demand for a trained labour pool that is primarily connected to data science and computer science, and possesses multidisciplinary skills throughout the natural sciences, social sciences, as well as humanities. The world’s energy, water, food, as well as sanitation requirements will undergo a substantial transformation as a result of climate change, increasing toxic waste from industry, and the depletion of natural resources. This will necessitate the development of new skilled labour, particularly in the fields of biology, physics, chemistry, agriculture, climate research, and science. We specialise in the field of “How to Think” at the NEP. In the current digital era, there is an abundance of data, and as a result, we have endeavoured to eliminate the unnecessary information. Without a sense of purpose within the educational system, how can our Young generation reflect critically and innovate? 4-dimensional structure 5+3+3+4 – which is a progression from the 10+2 structure – may serve as a significant milestone in this direction. It is imperative to establish NEP 2020, and therefore, it may be necessary to comprehend any new modifications; this NEP2020.

Evolution of Educational Policies in India

Reconstruction in Education for Impacting a Sustainable Tomorrow

Book Description

Good quality education is an essential tool for achieving a more sustainable world. This was emphasised at the UN World Summit in Johannesburg in 2002 where the reorientation of current education systems was outlined as key to sustainable development. Education for sustainable development (ESD) promotes the development of the knowledge, skills, understanding, values, and actions required to create a sustainable world, which ensures environmental protection and conservation, promotes social equity, and encourages economic sustainability. The concept of ESD developed largely from environmental education, which has sought to develop the knowledge, skills, values, attitudes, and behaviours in people to care for their environment. The aim of ESD is to enable people to make decisions and carry out actions to improve our quality of life without compromising the planet. It also aims to integrate the values inherent in sustainable development into all aspects and levels of learning. Education and the future are inseparably intertwined. It is impossible to think about educational matters without making references to the future. Our understanding of future determines, for example, what knowledge and which skills are important for the next generation. Regarding sustainability issues, it makes a difference whether sustainability is thought as a concrete aim which can be reached through technical innovation and efficiency, or whether it is more a normative direction which needs to be determined democratically. Futures in education determine decisions in the present and thus can be understood as “futures for the present.” If the future is the same as the present or can be predicted with any certainty, then it would seem to be not so difficult to decide what the next generation should best be equipped with. However, if the future is presumed to be uncertain, which is ultimately the case, then the necessary knowledge and skills are not that easy to determine. On closer observation of society and educational practice, the described idealized picture of education seems difficult to maintain. Especially institutionalized education isfar from being free of external influences. The promise of a better future has been shattered because of a few severe global crises. Future in post-modern societies has come to be understood, instead, as uncertain, and contingent.
