Excerpt from Indiana Baptist History, 1798-1908 The author having through many years interested himself in gathering data for a history of the Baptists of Indiana, had the impression that he owed it to his brethren to undertake the work. He has found them willing and glad to assist in the undertaking, and he is under obligation to many; he would particularly mention the help rendered by the Rev. J. K. Howard, of Indianapolis, and the Rev. L. S. Sanders, of Franklin, in gaining a knowledge of the Associations of southwestern Indiana; and the Rev. Charles Herring, of Lima, in securing statistics of the Free Baptists of northern Indiana. Certain facts are found here which may also be found in Dr. William Cathcart's Baptist Encyclopaedia, and in Dr. J. A. Smith's Baptists of the Western States east of the Mississippi - but the author furnished the Indiana notes for both these treatises. As to the statistics of numbers and finances, only approximate accuracy can be claimed, because of the imperfect records and reports of the churches and because of the fact that the church year, the Association year, the Convention year and the year of the different national denominational organizations do not coincide with the calendar year, nor with each other. The statistics given are substantially correct. The biographical sketches have been given in connection with the Association or Society in which the person did most of his denominational work. Frederick Burwick's modest but comprehensive and insightful intro duction is preface enough to these sensible essays in the history and philosophical criticism of ideas. If we want to understand how some in quiring and intelligent thinkers sought to go beyond mechanism and vitalism, we will find Burwick's labors of assembling others and reflect ing on his own part to be as stimulating as anywhere to be found. And yet his initial cautious remark is right: 'approaches', not 'attainments'. The problems associated with clarifying 'matter' and 'form' are still beyond any consensus as to their solution. Even more do we recognize the many forms and meanings of 'form', and this is so even for 'organic form'. That wise scientist-philosopher-engineer Lancelot Law Whyte struggled in a place neighboring to Burwick's, and his essay of thirty years ago might be a scientist's preface to Burwick and his colleagues: see Whyte'S Accent on Form (N. Y., Harper, 1954) and his Symposium of 1951 Aspects of Form (London, Percy Lund Humphries 1951; and Indiana University Press 1961), itself arranged in honor of D' Arcy Thompson's classical monograph On Growth and Form. Philosophy and history of science must deal with these issues, and with the mixture of hard-headedness and imagination that they de mand.

Sixteen of his former colleagues and students join in this volume in honoring Walter Silz. Concentrating on a single theme--the German drama--this volume contains essays and interpretations of plays ranging from Hrotsvit von Gandersheim to Bertolt Brecht. Eight of the sixteen essays deal with dramas from the area of Silz's main concentration--the nineteenth century. Also included are a tribute to Silz and a bibliography of his writings.
