In Indigenous Women’s Writing and the Cultural Study of Law, Cheryl Suzack explores Indigenous women’s writing in the post-civil rights period through close-reading analysis of major texts by Leslie Marmon Silko, Beatrice Culleton Mosionier, Louise Erdrich, and Winona LaDuke. Working within a transnational framework that compares multiple tribal national contexts and U.S.-Canadian settler colonialism, Suzack sheds light on how these Indigenous writers use storytelling to engage in social justice activism by contesting discriminatory tribal membership codes, critiquing the dispossession of Indigenous women from their children, challenging dehumanizing blood quantum codes, and protesting colonial forms of land dispossession. Each chapter in this volume aligns a court case with a literary text to show how literature contributes to self-determination struggles. Situated at the intersections of critical race, Indigenous feminist, and social justice theories, Indigenous Women’s Writing and the Cultural Study of Law crafts an Indigenous-feminist literary model in order to demonstrate how Indigenous women respond to the narrow vision of law by recuperating other relationships–to themselves, the land, the community, and the settler-nation.

Indigenous Women and Violence offers an intimate view of how settler colonialism and other structural forms of power and inequality created accumulated violences in the lives of Indigenous women. This volume uncovers how these Indigenous women resist violence in Mexico, Central America, and the United States, centering on the topics of femicide, immigration, human rights violations, the criminal justice system, and Indigenous justice. Taking on the issues of our times, Indigenous Women and Violence calls for the deepening of collaborative ethnographies through community engagement and performing research as an embodied experience. This book brings together settler colonialism, feminist ethnography, collaborative and activist ethnography, emotional communities, and standpoint research to look at the links between structural, extreme, and everyday violences across time and space. Indigenous Women and Violence is built on engaging case studies that highlight the individual and collective struggles that Indigenous women face from the racial and gendered oppression that structures their lives. Gendered violence has always been a part of the genocidal and assimilationist projects of settler colonialism, and it remains so today. These structures—and the forms of violence inherent to them—are driving criminalization and victimization of Indigenous men and women, leading to escalating levels of assassination, incarceration, or transnational displacement of Indigenous people, and especially Indigenous women. Book Description

This dissertation reads legal codifications of the Native American family in dynamic relation with figurative renderings of love, marriage, family, and sexuality by Native writers in the United States and Canada in the period 1886-1936. In bringing together the fields of literature and law, I investigate how indigenous legal concepts and metaphors are expressed in literary texts to variously articulate, refigure, and subvert political relations with colonial forces. Native writers operated within and against literary conventions and bounded political space to speak to multiple audiences. This project focuses primarily upon native women intellectuals, and emphasizes the intersections of gender formation and colonial processes. Domestic relations serve as the locus of analysis, as I explore the literary and legal functions of kinship terms, marriage contracts, adoption, and paternal/maternal relations between and among native nations and federal powers in the U.S. and Canada. I emphasize the legal and cultural context of each text by drawing on historical material, commentaries on federal and aboriginal law, and cultural studies texts. The introduction explores the interplay of native legal concepts, federal Indian law, and native literary traditions and asserts the significance of transnational approaches. The second chapter analyzes how Mohawk writer Emily Pauline Johnson figures treaty metaphors in an early poem to assert a distinct Six Nations political subjectivity and how two short stories question the policies of "liberal benevolence" by the Canadian government. The third chapter considers the legal concept of "occupation" as a multiply inflected term in Okanogan writer Mourning Dove's western romance, Cogewea, and analyzes the function of indigenous preoccupation as it animates claims to land and self-determination. The fourth chapter compares the rhetorical strategies of two texts by Oneida writer Laura Cornelius Kellogg: a speech for the Society of American Indians and her essay collection, Our Democracy and the American Indian, prepared for a general audience. The final chapter examines Cree/Flathead writer D'Arcy McNickle's 1936 novel, The Surrounded, in the context of the Indian Reorganization Act of 1934. I explore how the novel contests government paternalism, giving particular attention to the Kateri narrative embedded in Catherine's story of spiritual resistance

Contemporary Indian English Literature focuses on the recent history of Indian literature in English since the publication of Salman Rushdie's novel Midnight's Children (1981), a watershed moment for Indian writing in English in the global literary landscape. Anglophone Indian Women Writers, 1870–1920


Book Description

The result of extensive archival recovery work, Ellen Brinks's study fills a significant gap in our understanding of women's literary history of the South Asian subcontinent under colonialism and of Indian women's contributions and responses to developing cultural and political nationalism. As Brinks shows, the invisibility of Anglophone Indian women writers cannot be explained simply as a matter of colonial marginalization or as a function of dominant theoretical approaches that reduce Indian women to the status of figures or tropes. The received narrative that British imperialism in India was perpetuated with little cultural contact between the colonizers and the colonized population is complicated by writers such as Toru Dutt, Krupabai Satthianadhan, Pandita Ramabai, Cornelia Sorabji, and Sarojini Naidu. All five women found large audiences for their literary works in India and in Great Britain, and all five were also deeply rooted in and connected to both South Asian and Western cultures. Their works created new zones of cultural contact and exchange that challenge postcolonial theory's tendencies towards abstract notions of the colonized women as passive and of English as a de-facto instrument of cultural domination. Brinks's close readings of these texts suggest new ways of reading a range of issues central to postcolonial studies: the relationship of colonized women to the metropolitan (literary) culture; Indian and English women's separate and joint engagements in reformist and nationalist struggles; the 'translatability' of culture; the articulation strategies and complex negotiations of self-identification of Anglophone Indian women writers; and the significance and place of cultural difference.
