The aim of this volume is to underline common aspects of dynamical properties of surfaces and adsorbates which can sustain energy transfer and to assess the role and importance of specific energy and charge transfer mechanisms in constituting the properties of surface and adsorbate electronic, vibronic, photoabsorption and similar spectra, the dynamics of adsorption/desorption and trapping processes, surface scattering phenomena involving electrons, ions or neutral particles etc. In this regard, special attention has been paid to model descriptions and discussions of inelastic interactions, screening and charge transfer processes encountered in XPS, AES, EELS, NEXAFS and electron, atomic/molecular and ion beam scattering experiments.

This volume is the proceedings of the Seventh Taniguchi International Sympo sium on the Theory of Condensed Matter. The symposium was held for five days from September 10 to 14, 1984 at Kashikojima, Mie, Japan. Dynamical proces ses and ordering on solid surfaces are the subjects of the symposium. About twenty participants stayed together at Shima Kanko Hotel, the symposium site, during the period. The intense and productive discussion in the bright sea s ide atmosphere of Kashi koj ima is bel i eved to have been impress i ve to all the participants. Dynamical processes on solid surfaces are the target of recent theoreti cal efforts in surface physics. Even if some of them are still in their in fant stage, important aspects begin to appear and vital concepts start to shape themselves. Some topics in the symposium were the energy transfer re lated with internal degrees of freedom of molecules, attempts to go beyond the trajectory approximati on, charge transfer and energy transfer between particles and solid surfaces, and related fundamental problems like adiaba tic potentials and electronic structures. In particular, really actively di scussed was the time-dependent Newns-Anderson model wi thout and wi th the intraatomic Coulomb interaction and sometimes with the interaction to the surface plasmons or phonons. Surface effects on the optical processes were discussed with great interest, such as the ABC-related problems of exciton polaritons and rare gas adsorbates on metal surfaces.

The Advanced Study Institute (AS I) entitled "Phase Transitions in Surface Films" was held at the Ettore Majorana Centre for Scientific Culture in Erice, Sicily from June 19 to June 29, 1990. It reviewed the present understanding (experimental and theoretical) of phase transitions of surfaces, interfaces, and thin ftlms as well as the related structural and dynamical properties of these systems. From its inception, this ASI was envisioned as a sequel to one of the same title organized eleven years earlier by J. G. Dash and J. Ruvalds which was also held at the Ettore Majorana Centre. The previous ASI reflected the progress which had been made in understanding quasi two-dimensional (2D) states of matter, particularly adsorbed monolayers, and the phase transitions which occur in them. At that time, the field was barely ten years old. The modern field to which we are referring here can be traced to the landmark experiments of A. Thorny and X. Duval. Beginning in 1967, they published a series of papers presenting evidence from vapor pressure measurements of 2D phases of krypton and other gases adsorbed on polycrystalline (exfoliated) graphite. Their work led to a large number of thermodynamic and scattering experiments on physisorbed ftlms. This in turn motivated a great deal of theoretical interest in 2D systems and their phase transitions.

The interest and challenges of the field continue to shift from simple homogeneous solutions to increasingly more complex heterogeneous systems and interfaces. Over the past decade there have been numerous theoretical and experimental breakthroughs many of which still exist only in the primary literature.
