Injuries and Diseases of the Genital and Urinary Organs (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Injuries and Diseases of the Genital and Urinary Organs The ms. Of this work was completed in September, 1894, and was then put aside during the busy months of the winter session. It has since been carefully revised, and somewhat added to, with the wish that it might be fairly representa tive of surgical opinion and practice at the moment of its publication. It is in a way a continuation of my book on the Surgical Diseases of the Kidney, a second edition of which is now in course of preparation for the Press. For many years it has been my intention to publish a treatise on the Surgery of the Genital and Lower Urinary Organs. In 1885 I undertook a series of articles on these subjects, but the pressure of other work made it difficult for me to write them in the allotted time, and I was graciously allowed to withdraw from my engagement. It is only too probable that my intention would still have remained nu realised, had I not made a promise to contribute the articles on these subjects to the System of Surgery edited by Mr. Frederick Treves. This promise has influenced me not only to write this book without further procrastination, but to write it on the lines adopted in that work. A Practical Treatise on the Diseases, Injuries and Malformations of the Urinary Bladder, the Prostate Gland, and the Urethra (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from A Practical Treatise on the Diseases, Injuries and Malformations of the Urinary Bladder, the Prostate Gland, and the Urethra A new edition of this work having been called for, after having been out of print for several years, I have entrusted its revision to my son, Dr. S. W. Gross, who has rewritten the greater portion of it, and brought it fully up to the existing state of our knowledge. As he has delivered several courses of lectures upon the affections of the urinary organs in the Jeffer son Medical College, and has devoted much study and attention to their practical details, I felt satisfied that the task would be thoroughly executed. The chapters on Tumors of the Bladder and of the Prostate Gland, which add largely to the value of the work, are entirely due to his pen. It is proper to observe that the anatomy of the urinary organs, and the appendix in relation to the prevalence of stone in the bladder and calculous disorders in the United States, inserted into the former editions, have been omitted in this. To Dr. C. H. Mastin, of Mobile, Alabama, I am indebted for the statistics of lithotomy as performed by American surgeons; and I am also under obliga tions to Dr. Barnes, surgeon-general U. S. Army, for several engravings illustrative of various topics discussed in these pages. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Surgical Diseases of the Genito-Urinary Organs (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Surgical Diseases of the Genito-Urinary Organs Gonorrhea, however, is so intimately associated with all the in flammatory disorders of the genito-urinary tract, both in its physical expression as an acute disease and in the wide-reaching influence of its sequelae, that its consideration has been greatly amplified and its course followed up far beyond the genito-urinary system (into the eye, the joints, This is essential in order to make the subject complete. A conservative attitude has been adopted upon some important questions of surgical treatment, such, for instance, as ureteral catheterization, a subject not yet logically judged by experience nor sufficiently tried in the furnace of statistics. The Surgical Diseases of the Genito-Urinary Organs Including Syphilis (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Surgical Diseases of the Genito-Urinary Organs Including Syphilis Time and surgical advance have destroyed in great part the value of the original treatise upon which this revision is founded, making it an unsafe guide as a text-book upon certain subjects. The original book for which my dear old master and myself were mutually responsible was issued in 1874, and since that date until the present time has received no material alteration. The whole subject of litholapaxy has had its birth since that date; supra-pubic cystotomy has been restored to a new life; the surgery of the kidney has been constructed anew, and radical changes have been introduced into the surgery of the tunica vaginalis and that relating to the treatment of varicocele. Many minor advances have been made by the profession all along the line followed in this treatise. To bring the book up to date, therefore, it became necessary to recast it entirely, and the publishers have found it expedient to destroy the old stereotyped plates and to set up the entire book anew in type. There are comparatively few pages in which interpolations of more or less importance have not been made. All the cases have been left out, to give place for new matter, and several of the chapters (on stone) have been dropped entirely, being replaced by others. In this way it has been possible to add considerable new material without materially adding to the number of pages. The plan of the original book has been scrupulously adhered to, and its scope remains unaltered. I have missed the kindly counsel and the mature judgment of my friend and teacher, without which the original of this work would not have been written.
