Inside a Police Informant's Mind

Book Description

Written by a former informant, Inside a Police Informant`s Mind presents an honest account of the role, risks, and motives of police informants. It chronicles the relationship and course of events between the author and a Royal Canadian Mounted Police commissioner. The author provides a fascinating insider's perspective on the working relationship between an informant and those in law enforcement who handle informants. The book gives balanced insight into the thoughts of both the police and the informant, addressing the hazards of manipulation by both parties. It highlights the importance of trust, communication, and understanding as means to bridge those hazards. Also, it demonstrates the difficult shift in lifestyle being an informant entails. After testifying in court, Paul Derry`s life was placed at high risk of retribution, necessitating his entry into a witness protection program. He reflects upon the process of entering a witness protection program and life afterward, not only for himself but also for his family. This autobiographical account is a must-read for police officers and informant handlers and is an especially useful source for intelligence gathering. The vivid, real-life accounts of Inside a Police Informant`s Mind are as revelatory as they are engrossing. It is a great addition to any collection of books on law enforcement and criminal justice. Speaking Truth to Power

Book Description

Domestic drug enforcement takes many forms, from the rural patrol officer who happens upon a small-scale mobile “shake and bake” methamphetamine lab during a routine traffic stop, to the city narcotics detective who initiates a low-level buy-bust operation that nets a few hits of crack cocaine on the street corner, to the local, state, and federal agents working in multiagency task forces that coordinate a sting operation that nets thousands of kilos of near-pure cocaine being transported by tractor-trailer. Regardless of the form, there is a high probability that these authorities have exploited access to known offenders and exerted pressure on those individuals to gather inside information on illicit drug sales. These confidential informants provide intelligence on the inner workings of drug operations in exchange for leniency or remuneration, providing a relatively cheap source of intelligence that fuels much of the ongoing war on drugs. In other instances, law enforcement authorities will reach out to members of the criminal underworld who are willing to provide valuable intelligence in exchange for money. Despite the central role of informants in contemporary police operations, little is known about the shadowy relationships among law enforcement, snitches, and offenders. Based on ethnographic fieldwork in the narcotics, homicide, and street-level vice operations in two major metropolitan police departments, Speaking Truth to Power takes readers to the front lines of the war on drugs to unravel this complex web of information exchange.

The Red Word in the Blue Mind

Book Description

The Red Word in the Blue Mind: Volume II is the second edition of what it was like being me, and this selection of poetry gives the reader a live look vicariously through my words and see it though my eyes. The inspiration was in the dark alley of a childhood memory and then brought to realization by a journey that brought me from those dark places to an even darker place called prison. My poetry has been motivated by religious ideas and philosophies, the financial success of being broke, to now being able to write books of poetry. It tickles the heartstrings of love and even dives in the depths of pain. Some of this work involves family, friends, or even casual acquaintances. The fun times as a teenager and the growing pains of becoming a man. Its all in this Red Word in the Blue Mind: Volume II. In this new edition I am introducing a new selection of my thoughts called Jewel. They are the quotes that I wrote while inside and have been living by them to express on my path of enlightenment, the very serious thoughts that one must have to rise above their current situation. Some people in the world who go to the elite schools and have the best of everything have raised up from a simple formula of life that once it is mastered the art is passed down from generation to generation. I have stumbled upon the fragments of the rip pages of this formula to try to share with the people what I have figured out. Yet I had to enclose it in the form of a poem. In the poem I had to hide from those that do not love the art of wisdom or success. Everybody doesnt read so my words until then to them it will never become red. This is bigger than Crips and Bloods or Democrats and Republicans. The Red Word in the Blue Mind: Volume II is a collection of my life collaged with the life of others.

Policing the Womb

Book Description

In Policing the Womb, Michele Goodwin explores how states abuse laws and infringe on rights to police women and their pregnancies. This book looks at the impact of these often arbitrary laws which can result in the punishment, incarceration, and humiliation of women, particularly poor women and women of color. Frequently based on unscientific claims of endangering a fetus, these laws allow extraordinary powers to state authorities over reproductive freedom and pregnancies. In this book, Michele Goodwin discusses real examples of women whose pregnancies have been controlled by the law and what has led to the United States being the deadliest country in the developed world for a woman to be pregnant.

Arts and Aesthetics in a Globalizing World

Book Description

This is an investigation of arts and aesthetics in their widest senses and experiences, presenting a variety of perspectives which range from the metaphysical to the political. The volume includes an impressive variety of case studies offered by established leaders in the field and original and emerging scholarly talent covering areas in India, Nepal, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Rwanda, and Germany, as well as providing transnational or diasporic perspectives. From the contradictory demands made on successful artists from the south in the global art world such as Anish Kapoor, to images of war and puppetry created by female political prisoners, the volume compels creative and political interpretations of the ever-changing and globalizing terrain of arts and aesthetics.

Friendly Fire?

Book Description

Emotions. Life. The saying goes that the eyes are the windows to your soul. Given that to be true, then I submit that life's experiences are the lifeline to the heart. For every experience, there is a new piece added to the heart. With each new experience, comes an emotion. Many come with emotions. Many emotions are new, many are somewhat the same, yet independent of themselves. Each also carries varying degrees at which each emotion is felt...each experience a piece, of varying size, of the heart. And it's the culmination of those experiences that make up our heart. Which emotions do we feel strongest? Which emotions seem to control us? Which emotions make us weak. We all experience differently, create differently, and envision differently. We all have varying degrees of emotions, through our experiences and through our creativity and visions. This collection of experiences will take the reader into a past of memories, triggering thoughts and maybe a smile or two. This collection may take the reader into a present thought process, triggering experiences that readers may be encountering now. Finally, this collection will take the reader deep into thought about their visions of the future. This is a feel good collection of poems that will set the reader at ease, yet will delve into some deep emotions. Enjoy!

Notorious C.O.P.

Book Description

Throughout his career, Derrick Parker worked on some of the biggest criminal cases in rap history, from the shooting at Club New York, where Derrick personally escorted Jennifer Lopez to police headquarters, to the first shooting of Tupac Shakur. Always straddling the fence between "po-po" and NYPD outsider, Derrick threatened police tradition to try to get the cases solved. He was the first detective to interview an informant offering a detailed account of Biggie Smalls's murder. He protected one of the only surviving eyewitnesses to the Jam Master Jay murder and knows the identity of the killers as well as the motivation behind the shooting. Notorious C.O.P. reveals hip-hop crimes that never made the paper—like the robbing of Foxy Brown and the first Hot 97 shooting—and answers some lingering questions about murders that have remained unsolved. The book that both the NYPD and the hip-hop community don't want you to read, Notorious C.O.P. is the first insider look at the real links between crime and hip-hop and the inefficiencies that have left some of the most widely publicized murders in entertainment history unsolved.
